Electric vehicle sales outpace diesel again
- thedrbrian 5y agoI’m sure people are doing this out of pure altruism and not for the massive tax/BIK savings that the government have set up https://www.parkers.co.uk/car-tax/advice/bik-changes-for-plug-in-hybrid-and-electric-cars/ https://www.parkers.co.uk/car-tax/advice/bik-changes-for-plu...
- pjerem 5y agoAnd that’s totally ok. Taxes are one of the tool a government can use to lean towards societal goals.
- walshemj 5y agoTax breaks for rich middle class people :-) As with solar power used to be, our solar installation is guaranteed an 8% roi for 20 years plus the advantage of the power we generate
- junon 5y agoAlas, that's what taxes should be used for :)
- ljf 5y agoI for one am really pleased that those cars will enter the used car market soon - yes the benefits hit one group today, but soon that will be spread further.
- Tagbert 5y agoThis gets more EVs into the market, builds demand, and once these are cars go on the used market, ensures more, cheaper EVs for people who can’t afford a new car.
- squarefoot 5y agoAlso the used market should help bring down the new ones prices for being comparatively in better condition than combustion ones with the same age. It's probably too early to build any significant statistics, but electric engines should last a lot more than combustion ones, therefore a well treated used electric car would probably just need a new set of batteries and tires even after hundreds thousands of Km.
- r00fus 5y agoTax policy is public policy. If a government has a desire to deal with climate change, the best way to entice/force industry and consumers to take action is to bake those initiatives into tax policy.
- abeetje 5y agoGood! Find me an affordable electric vehicle that can get me to work and back home on a single charge (360km) even in the winter, and I'd be down. But alas, I have yet to find one, so I'm currently looking at a diesel and hopefully can trade that one in for an electric one in a couple of years (thanks to the innovation in batteries that the current purchasers stimulate).
- nharada 5y agoDang that's a brutal commute
- underscore_ku 5y agohe's lying
- cogman10 5y agoThat's quite the commute! A tesla model 3 long range can certainly do that sort of trip, but it's somewhat expensive ($50,000 USD). The standard range version MIGHT be able to hit it, but it'd be close. This is where I wish more work garages would prioritize having charging installed. It'd also help with people that live in apartments.
- thescriptkiddie 5y agoHave you considered moving closer to work?
- Scoundreller 5y agoOr charging infra at work.
- Tagbert 5y agoHave you considered a hybrid? It should give you the long range but generate much less CO2 and particulates than a diesel.

- fattybob 5y agoThese kind if arguments are kinda senseless, I imagine the driver refuels on the journey / breaks the journey in some way, but, it seems the UK north of London probably does need a lot more charging options on the road. Personally, I would still be using a diesel in the north of the Uk too, but I’m hoping I won’t need to do soon!
- fattybob 5y agoAs for taxation, don’t worry, soon enough they will be taxing electricity used to charge vehicles! Just take a look at the different tax rates on diesel for public vs farm utility ! - I’m assuming it still differs significantly (I’m living overseas, but planning a return home)
