Cargo bikes deliver faster and cleaner than vans, study finds
- cycomanic 5y agoI'm not surprised. I've been using a cargo bike for bringing my kids to a from school/kindergarten and I would definitely agree that in a city traveling by cargo bike is definitely faster than a car. This is true in particular in the morning and afternoons. The most annoying thing are actually parents in their cars (often big SUVs) dropping kids off in their kids at school. They seem to almost completely loose sense of their surroundings, because they are in such a rush to find a park and get their kids out of the car. It really seems only a matter of time until something serious happens (I'm reasonably safe, but there are also a lot of kids walking around).
- Arnt 5y agoThat's a four-minute difference per errand. Assuming one minute out of the van/off the bike, that leaves five minutes for getting to the next point on bike or nine minutes by car. Going by bike is faster, no question about that, but I'm surprised by the magnitude.
- robotfelix 5y agoThis may just be the Guardian's wording of the data source, but it makes it sound more like the real conclusion is "parcels currently being delivered by cargo bikes are better suited to delivery by cargo bike than by van". The subheading does add the caveat that they were only looking at city centres, but I can't help that think it's a little ungenerous to ignore some of the areas within city centres that vans might potentially still excel (eg: bulky items)
