We are never going to move past this pandemic until anti-vaxxers face inconvenience.
Basic epidemiology and immunology suggests otherwise.
Can you think of any pandemic in the history of human existence that didn't eventually end even in the absence of vaccines?
- sand500 5y agoSmallpox?
- krona 5y agoWas eradicated by vaccine. Without the vaccine many more would've died but that wasn't my point.
- sand500 5y agoMaybe I parsed your sentence wrong but Smallpox would have never gone away without the vaccine.
- jleyank 5y agoI thought polio was also dealt with via mass vaccination? There are rumours of weaponized polio but not in general distribution, fortunately. An hiv vaccine with the efficacy of COVID vaccines would result in a vaccination rate so fast it would have relativistic effects.
- mynameishere 5y agoLots of pandemics become endemic and so "never end". Covid-19 will be doing that as well, unless you can get almost 100 percent of humans to take sterilizing (ie, nonexistent) vaccines and kill every feline reservoir. And any others that may pop up.
- thinkingemote 5y agoIt's impossible for the virus to disappear via vaccines at a global level. The bubonic plague is still around. An attempt would probably destroy multiple developing worlds economies. It's probably possible for a developed country with strong borders and checks like NZ but borders mostly are very leaky and ... Problematic. NZ will have to vaccinate enough and then live with it being part of life if it wants to open up to the world.
- scotty79 5y agoFlu. Common cold. Herpes. We have many ongoing pandemics. We just tolerate them because we have no choice and because they are not very lethal.
- nradov 5y agoThere is no vaccine for HIV yet and the worldwide pandemic has been going on for decades. Antiviral and prophylactic drugs have slowed down transmission in some countries.
