I interview any time a recruiter brings something interesting and with a 10% salary bump. I used to get super stressed out and as I kept interviewing it got better. I thought I failed so many interviews, often said I don't know what that is...etc...always super honest about my abilities. Out of 10 or so interviews I was presented with an offer 9 times. I am not a rockstar, no github till recent.
A good company will most likely have a decent onboard process. You will have access to learning resources. You often are not expected to contribute for a while. Unless you are a perfect match for the position, otherwise you will have to pick up the stack. The hiring company knows this, if you are good java dev, chances are you can pick up c# quickly and someone might take a chance.
Don't wait till you are fired. Right now, when you receive an offer you 'appear' to have an upper hand in negotiations. The interested company doesn't know your company is not treating you well. You are just looking for a change etc., don't say anything negative about current company.
- giantg2 5y agoI've thought about that too. The problem is, my company would likely fire me if they were to find out that I was applying elsewhere. So far I haven't found anything that looks much better. The closest thing I found was an Android dev position with InnaMed. I am tempted to apply, but the commute would suck. Plus my home life doesn't really allow me to commit enough time to get up to speed. For now I'm looking at internal postings, although I don't see very many opportunities here either.
- avgDev 5y agoYou sounds like someone who is in a abusive relationship and should get out. Look for remote jobs, send out your resume non-stop. Being worried about getting fired because you are looking is insane. Companies generally won't contact your current employer without a heads up.
- giantg2 5y agoThat still doesn't fix my home life issues that won't give me the time to transition and learn a new company/language/tech/etc. I'm stuck and I'm thinking that's just how it'll be.
