United States sells Wu-Tang album forfeited by Martin Shkreli
- chetan_v 5y ago"The contract of sale contains a confidentiality provision that protects information relating to the buyer and price." Wow that sucks, would have been quite interesting to know how the government found a buyer and how much it was sold for.
- arthurcolle 5y agoIt's probably some crypto loon who will turn around and make it an NFT
- paulpauper 5y agoand then 'sell' it for $70 million and no $ will change hands
- Niglodonicus 5y agoPrepare to be brigaded by crypto loons edit: and it begins
- arthurcolle 5y agoI am a crypto loon. There's literally dozens of us!
- seriousquestion 5y agoWhat would be the justification for making it private anyway? Shouldn't this be transparent?
- Enginerrrd 5y agoWell the notoriety of buying it didn't exactly help Shkreli's situation much, did it? If you want wealthy people to take an interest in buying it, it seems sensible.
- PragmaticPulp 5y agoTo prevent the buyer from becoming a target for crime. If people know who has it, they might try to extort him or worse. I don’t see any reason the information needs to be public.
- rchaud 5y agoThat would turn off a lot of buyers because it would bring undue attention. Buyers may not know the exact origin of stuff they're buying. A car for instance could formerly have belonged to a person you might not want to run into. A public record of that purchase however would make it a possible target not just for the original owner, but also any rivals he/she may have.
- djbebs 5y agoPresumably because shrekli purchased it under those conditions. He can't sell you the right to state the price because he doesn't own it.
- kgantchev 5y agoI love how the government dug through the guy's entire life just to find something they could nab him on and straight up destroyed him. That's some G stuff!
- slickrick216 5y agoI’m convinced they did this just to get their hands on the Wu Tang album. The Ol dirty bastards in Washington have always been true fans.
- H8crilA 5y agoIt's not like it's easier to seize digital assets such as stocks in a brokerage portfolio. Speaking of which, I guess he's completely broke that they bothered to go after this?
- slickrick216 5y agoHe’s going to get out. Do an excel course on Udemy and be back on the road to being a millionaire in no time.
- babyshake 5y agoIf what you say is true, the Shaolin and the Wu-Tang could be dangerous.
- hereforphone 5y agoNever threaten a Clinton (I anticipate downvotes.. and they'll be reinforcing my position that they're off-limits)
- Falling3 5y agoSo if your comment were heavily upvoted you would've reconsidered your position? Or will any outcome whatsoever just reinforce your existing ideas?
- ValentineC 5y agoI remember learning about this album because it was the request with the highest bounty on What.CD: https://www.reddit.com/r/trackers/comments/5abmpz/martin_shkreli_begs_for_whatcd_invite_in_twitter/d9f8luo/ https://www.reddit.com/r/trackers/comments/5abmpz/martin_shk... R.I.P. What.CD. :'(
- isoprophlex 5y agoFWIW... It still is the album with the highest bounty on redacted
- shiado 5y agoI gave up on private trackers after what.cd died. Has redacted surpassed what.cd?
- CiceroCiceronis 5y agoSadly not, although it’s doing as well as could be expected given the reduced interest in torrents that streaming has brought. There will always be certain things like rare scene rips that are unlikely to ever be resurrected.
- JoshGlazebrook 5y agoSame, for music at least. Spotify/Apple Music provides anything I could want. But my tastes were never niche to begin with.
- Y_Y 5y agoI miss What and Oink. I didn't even bother finding out what the next incarnation was and trying to get an invite, I just gave up and got Spotify. There's still tons of good music that I only ever found on those trackers. The quality of recommendations was also peerless. Have any of the successors rebuilt that?
- ggrelet 5y agoThere’s RED: https://interviewfor.red/ https://interviewfor.red/
- bastard_op 5y agoSomeone should crowdfund the purchase and dump it to flac on piratebay. I got 5 on it...
- Ajay-p 5y agoNow that is really unfortunate. I'm sure everyone on HN would have liked the opportunity to bid for the album.
- nightowl_games 5y agoThis is the ultimate story line for this album. I, for one, am happy with this outcome.
- BurningFrog 5y agoThis now has to be the most gangster rap album of all time!
- ww520 5y agoIf they could just issue a bunch of NFT's to the album, they could make out more by selling the NFT's.
- sitkack 5y agoWas this sold in a fair auction? How much was it sold for? The memo says > his payment of the forfeiture is now complete for the 7.4m owed, so was it sold for more? Or was it the first buyer to show up with that amount?
- ydnaclementine 5y agoCache Rules Everything Around Me (C.R.E.A.M.)
- literallyaduck 5y ago"Asset Recovery Section" nice way of saying vultures, but sympathy for someone raising the price medication is rarer than NFTs of Mr. Shkreli's mugshots.
