This brought back memories, maybe Win98, where you would right click then accidentally mouse over the "New" menu and have the computer swap for 15-20 seconds in order to bring up the large list of new things you could possibly create.
- colecut 5y agoAnd more often than not you had hovered over the "new" menu on accident
- dannyw 5y agoI'm running Windows 10 and the right click menu often takes like 3-10 seconds... :(
- zupa-hu 5y agoGet an SSD
- cunthorpe 5y agoIt feels a little weird that what is essentially a query from a dozen items takes longer than 10ms. The SSD shouldn't be needed.
- fomine3 5y agoSeek time on HDD is about 10ms for single IO, so it looks reasonable. Good news: Windows 11 simplifies context menu explorer. It won't show customized menu item by default.
- pjmlp 5y agoBad news (for devs), it is still COM based.
- marcosdumay 5y agoIt's reasonable for it to take more than 10ms. It's not reasonable for it to take many seconds.
- zupa-hu 5y agoEven if it shouldn’t, does it really matter? If you can’t change it, regardless the reasons, and getting an SSD is a fairly cheap/simple solution, then why wouldn’t you just get an SSD? Nobrainer.
- int_19h 5y agoExplorer context menu is extensible (via COM), and lots of apps register themselves there for various minor features. The more you have registered, the slower it loads, because it has to instantiate all the components backing those menu items - and they're often registered as out-of-proc servers that require spawning.
