The only thing I've been able to do to get an M1 to spin up the fan noticeably and get warm is to max out both the CPU and the GPU by playing Minecraft Java in a huge world or running other 3D-heavy things. The same things on an Intel laptop will turn it into what my friend comically calls a "weenie roaster" (for what it does when it's on your lap). Things like JetBrains CLion don't even make the M1 warm. That will make any Intel laptop start cookin'.
