side note: children are expensive and you probably shouldn't have them if you can't afford them

Not very strong ones when it comes to raising children. > side note: children are expensive and you probably shouldn't have them if you can't afford them Well it's definitely not a living wage if you can't have a child.

- gnarbarian 5y agoIs it a living wage if you can't afford a boat? This sounds like some serious scope creep to me.
- Dylan16807 5y agoWell it doesn't say anything about boats in the universal declaration of human rights... You really think having a child or two is scope creep for the basic things every person should be able to do in their life without financial ruin?
- jrsj 5y agoWell when I worked at McDonald’s my coworkers that had kids arguably had a higher standard of living than I did because of the government benefits, so maybe not
- gnarbarian 5y agoThis is kind of like a fiscal cliff.
- viraptor 5y agoIt's not a nice side note. Whether you can afford children or not can change (and permanently) from one day to the next. And you can't rely on the safety net being there - there's lots of situations where that fails.
- wesleywt 5y agoMain note: if you work full time you must be able to afford a child. It's a basic human need and absolute requirement for the future of country and economy. Developed countries like the USA and Japan are going into a crisis where there will be no workforce to pay for large aged population who can't work. Due to young people putting off having kids because they are desperate.
- gnarbarian 5y agoStemming immigration would help keep entry-level wages higher.
- AngryData 5y agoImmigration is the only reason we don't have negative population growth and a population demograph resembling Japan.
- smt88 5y ago> children are expensive and you probably shouldn't have them if you can't afford them Until the US has universal, free contraception (and education about contraception), as well as easy access to their constitutional right to an abortion, this is not a fair argument. Lots of people are actively misinformed about contraception in conservative public schools, and their access to abortion may be hindered by their state government. The end result is that some people accidentally have children, and society shares the consequences of that one way or another.
- ornornor 5y ago> well it's a good thing we have social safety nets then. because we do and that's exactly what they're for. Hahaha, yes the US is well known for its social safety nets. Like universal healthcare, paid maternity leave, or free contraceptives.
- alkonaut 5y agoSocial safety nets necessary for people working full time? Thanks late stage capitalism.
