The Well-Tempered Traveler
- sscarduzio 5y agoIMO https://nomadlist.com https://nomadlist.com is the real world version of this pet project: you can filter cities by many parameters including avg temperatures/precipitation in a certain month of the year.
- 0xbadcafebee 5y agoI've always liked holiday-weather.com. They don't just give you weather stats, but an overview of the place in different seasons, suggestions for hotels, restaurants, local sights, etc. All in a very lightweight design with no annoying ads. It's quite a lovely website. Example: https://www.holiday-weather.com/auckland/averages/november/ https://www.holiday-weather.com/auckland/averages/november/
- paulsb 5y agoI made something similar ages ago: https://www.cityclimes.com/ https://www.cityclimes.com/ It's full of bugs and the UI isn't great, but it was my first Elm and Rust project.

- soheil 5y agoIs there a list of all Google pet projects that are publicly visible?
- gabrielsroka 5y agoThey see us. We see them. https://github.com/lmanul/welltemperedtraveler/blob/master/2021-07-15_hackernews.png https://github.com/lmanul/welltemperedtraveler/blob/master/2...
- pdx_flyer 5y agoI would love to actually implement something like this that gives a very clear picture of when the weather is best (using last 5/10/15 years) for travel. Things like humidity and UV index matter but I have yet to find a historical source for that data. Anyone have a source that they like?
- wjan 5y agoSome years ago I've created an interactive map that serves similar purpose: https://weathernomad.com https://weathernomad.com
- lwansbrough 5y agoHuh, honestly very strange to see something so niche and unbranded on the google.com domain.
- samschooler 5y agoIt also looks to be completely uncompressed which is also rare across the web these days. Simply "Right Click > View Source".
- oh_sigh 5y agoIt would be funny if there was an exploit in there somewhere, since it seems to be using a completely personal stack and not whatever standard ones they have there
- ipaddr 5y agoIf you were going to run into an exploit it would be on whatever standard stack you run. A personal stack makes creating an exploit much more difficult and requires custom exploit development approach. Is the target worth the effort? Use a common framework / stack don't update and you will likely be hit by an automated exploit.
- oh_sigh 5y agoI disagree. Using the framework developed by hundreds of talented google engineers will protect you against a large number of attacks. Also, if an attack already exists on the common google framework, then that means google.com is already vulnerable through other usages of the framework, and one more site does not increase your attack surface at all.
- ggm 5y agodoesn't have my city. bizarre. Brisbane has Bureau of Metrology data back to the dawn of time. Has Sydney, so its not lack of understanding of the AU data
- paranoidrobot 5y agonor any other Australian capital except Canberra.
- jumelles 5y agoNo Phoenix either.
- wutbrodo 5y agoIt's not that weird, as there are only a couple hundred cities listed
- azinman2 5y agoBut if you look at the choices, it feels very arbitrary. Jerusalem and Tel Aviv aren't on there.
- triceratops 5y agoAdamstown, population 40, is on there. It's the main population center of the Pitcairn Islands. TIL.
- wutbrodo 5y agoYea, agreed. Thats why I didn't think it was strange that a given city was missing (though I don't know that Jerusalem or tel Aviv would be crucial to any such list either?)
- dddw 5y agoIndeed a very strange set of cities, my thoughts exactly
- Rebelgecko 5y ago
- airstrike 5y agoPretty neat visualization even though the execution is a bit sluggish Also weird how it mismatches on the search for "San Francisco" of all places. Looks like it splits the terms on spaces rather than, say, commas, and then matches any of those, so "york rio" will show New York and Rio de Janeiro Even weirder is that it replaces commas with spaces before splitting the string, so "york, rio" has the same result
- meibo 5y agoWow, since when is this a thing? Seems a bit off-brand, like a hobby project you do to try that new JS framework. It's cool nontheless, would love to hear how that came together, not something you expect to just be in a google.com subfolder.
- jsnell 5y agoRepo: https://github.com/lmanul/welltemperedtraveler https://github.com/lmanul/welltemperedtraveler I have to assume that the submitted URL won't be around for long, given it looks like an unannounced and unmaintained pet project of somebody who is no longer at the company.
- why_only_15 5y agoHuh so this is the same guy who did all those cartoons that people mentioned.
- dmoy 5y agoYes, same guy who did goomics
- meibo 5y agoWhat position do you have to be in at Google to be able to upload your side projects to "google.com/X"? This seems to have been a year ago at most judging commits, so can't be something that's been there for ages.
- kccqzy 5y agoThere's actual plenty of interesting (usually old) content that's obviously not an official project hosted at this kind of URLs. It's a bummer you can't use Google the search engine to discover them. http://google.com/googledance2004 http://google.com/googledance2004 http://google.com/moon http://google.com/moon http://google.com/googlegulp http://google.com/googlegulp http://google.com/heart http://google.com/heart
- mustacheemperor 5y agoThis would be a good example of the true definition of the "dark web", right? Websites that exist but are not accessible from any standard search engine or hosted directory.
- antisthenes 5y agoIs there a way to filter temperature somehow?
- mhashemi 5y agoIf you're into this sort of thing: https://weatherspark.com/ https://weatherspark.com/ Has all the breadth, and much more depth.
- deleted 5y ago[deleted]
- epivosism 5y agoCame here to mention weatherspark. I had thought they completely died out when they abandoned their awesome flash UI - good to see they still have nice data and visualizations.
- shepherdjerred 5y agoThis is incredible
- airstrike 5y agoAnd all the ads too, apparently. Literally unusable on mobile...
- scotty79 5y agoMost comfortable place I could find is Alexander Bay in South Africa. Seems really underdeveloped. Arequipa is even better. I think most comfortable places lie on west shores at medium latitude.
- 5y ago
- johnwheeler 5y agoWhat is this graphic showing exactly?
- yobert 5y agoJust a quick visual display of how hot/cold/wet/dry a lot of places are. I had no idea that Dublin was so nice!
- killjoywashere 5y agoI suspect it's a travel aid, a gestalt of months you should consider visiting these cities, and what to pack.
- goatsi 5y agoFrom the creator[0]: >When you click on a month it basically sorts all cities by order of "comfiness" which is a simple combination of temperature and precipitation (not too hot, not too cold, not too rainy). [0] https://twitter.com/lmanul/status/924470796264751104 https://twitter.com/lmanul/status/924470796264751104
- b20000 5y agodoes this fix google docs?
- LeoPanthera 5y agoFeature request: Choose your ideal temperature and it tells you what city to move to for each month.
- tvirosi 5y agoYeah, by the name of it I thought it was going to be some alt version of TSP where you have to go around the world and reach every city on the list while always having sunny days.
- mattowen_uk 5y agoWhy not fork it and do just that? https://github.com/lmanul/welltemperedtraveler https://github.com/lmanul/welltemperedtraveler
- prvc 5y agoIt would be nice to have other sort options such as "low date" or "mean temperature".
- neatze 5y agoMissing feature; compare side by side or may be diff cities weather.
- tigen 5y agoweatherspark.com.
- interstice 5y agoTickled me how the code refers to Fahrenheit as 'wacky'.
- 3wolf 5y agoPittsburgh has some data issues.
- JoelMcCracken 5y agoI love that the "low" value it shows is not just below absolute zero, but far, far, far below. Its like there is a scientific mystery being unearthed.
- Aunche 5y agoDue to the way temperature is defined, negative absolute temperature is actually possible, even absolute zero is not. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negative_temperature https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negative_temperature
- mastazi 5y agoThis would be even more useful if I could search my ideal temp range, and then it would highlight only the periods where a given city meets the requirement. (Currently in lockdown here in Sydney so all I can do is dreaming of travelling... )
- sharkweek 5y agoHere's another good one a friend of mine built: https://championtraveler.com/travel-weather-map/ https://championtraveler.com/travel-weather-map/ Allows you to choose and filter weather preferences then tells you where you can likely travel to find that weather. Now if only he could get it published on Google.com/...
- jh00ker 5y agoWhy is this #1 on HN? Just because of the high-profile URL? The project itself seems really basic, or am I missing something? Also there's a bug when search query contains a space... I don't mean to come off as super negative. I hate how the Internet is so overly critical. And Twitter is just the worst. I'm seriously asking if I'm missing something. THanks!
- skywal_l 5y agoFor me the only interesting bit is: "Made from weather data collected over the past 10 years"
- modriano 5y agoJust in case it's of interest to you, it's very easy to get historical weather data from weather stations all over the US [0] (and I assume most EU countries also publish this data). [0] https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/products/land-based-stations https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/products/land-based-stations
- deleted 5y ago[deleted]
- jimbob45 5y agoThe URL is a really obscure reference unless you play the piano too. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Well-Tempered_Clavier https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Well-Tempered_Clavier
- rococode 5y agoI'd like to see something like this combined with daylight hours. When daylight savings ends in November and twilight starts being as early as 5pm the lack of sunlight makes me feel pretty gloomy. I find myself much happier when it's still a bit bright outside at 7pm. Good weather is nice but I think daylight affects my wellbeing a lot more! I dream of someday being able to spend those couple months of "it's pitch black outside at 6pm" somewhere else in the world with more sun.
- john_minsk 5y agoIs this in California? Never occurred to me that this is the case there:) I’ve spent a fair bit of time in Middle East and it is sunset at 6-7pm pretty much throughout the year. And I must say when I traveled north to Netherlands/Germany in the summer - the experience was almost psychedelic. My dream is to be able one day to travel between north and south to follow longer day time(and summer) throughout the year.
- jefftk 5y ago> I’ve spent a fair bit of time in Middle East and it is sunset at 6-7pm pretty much throughout the year That's mostly about where you are within your timezone and whether you have Daylight Savings Time. On local solar time the sun has to spend as many days per year setting before 6pm as after.
- SerCe 5y agoIt would be amazing if they could choose whether to show °F or °C based on the country I'm accessing the website from instead of choosing one as a default.
- Erwin 5y agoWell, the standard temperature unit is Celsius, so Fahrenheit is rare and used just by a few obscure countries: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fahrenheit#Usage https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fahrenheit#Usage -- and USA. You are more likely to be in a country that has banned anti-personnel land mines than one using Fahrenheit.
- shrikant 5y agoThe code does check your browser locale of "en-US" and sets it to the "wacky" unit (Fahrenheit). Given that it's plain vanilla JS and only some rudimentary XMLHttpRequest, I'm not sure it can do much more?
- twelvechairs 5y agoSeems to skew hot. Sydney is shown as the cold months blue and hot months still green, yet its a city where the summer heat is far worse than winter cool. They should be deriving colours from a thermal comfort range plotted on a psychrometric chart for example https://i2.wp.com/theenvironmentalarchineer.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Psychrometric-special-2.jpg?w=729&ssl=1 https://i2.wp.com/theenvironmentalarchineer.com/wp-content/u...
- fouc 5y agoI've often thought that the "feels like" temperature isn't actually accurate enough. Nice tip about psychometrics/thermal comfort models.
- infologics 5y agoI really like reading through a post that can make people think. - rbrbr 5y agoWithout proper sorting and ordering options this is rather useless.
- mojuba 5y agoThanks for the ability to have a comma-separated list of locations. Such a trivial and useful thing. None of the alternatives posted in this thread seem to have this.
- systemvoltage 5y agoIt's refreshing to not see Google's material UI.
- jablongo 5y agohttps://twitter.com/lmanul/status/924351827604160512 https://twitter.com/lmanul/status/924351827604160512
- sgt 5y agoNeeds South African cities.
- blunte 5y agoInteresting that India has several cities which have rain during 40+C temps. Unless it is cooling significantly and raining only at night, that must be like living in a steam sauna.
- jFriedensreich 5y agoIn practice the mean temperature is pretty meaningless to how comfortable you feel in a country. Hot developed countries have AC everywhere so you don't have to be exposed and Germany is nice for maybe 3 months in spring and 3 in autumn, but during summer you have to sit in flats or cafes that are 32C because nowhere are ACs.
- yupper32 5y agoThe HN response here is a pretty good demo with regards to why large scale companies have a hard time trying out new things, IMO. And why smaller companies are able to bubble to the top on occasion. This is clearly a pet project of some sort, and yet there are dozens of feature requests and bug reports on HN, as if it should be a fully fleshed out Google product. Why can't an employee from some Big-N company make something for fun on the company domain? If it becomes popular, maybe the company would put real resources to it. And if it doesn't, why care so much? The answer is clear with the HN response. If HN, a group that should particularly appreciate it, can't handle it, the public certainly can't.
- CTDOCodebases 5y agoThe problem is that if a company uses its name and charges the same amount as it’s other services there is an inbuilt level of expectation which leads to disappointment. Personally I can’t think of a single application that couldn’t be better in some way. The solution to this would be to temper peoples expectations and host these types of projects under a different domain that clearly explains that the project is very early in production. Providing an opportunity to give feedback would also make people feel more involved in the projects and give projects that have no clear vision some guidance.
- np_tedious 5y ago"Charges"?
- CTDOCodebases 5y agoYes. I am trading my privacy and time for use of their service. Many people seem to disagree here but human expectations are a real phenomenon. Not to say these expectations are fair. My personal reaction to the link was amusement. It was like finding a hamburger and fries on the menu of a fine dining restaurant.

- pelorat 5y agoNice but it's a list of places basically no-one wants to visit.
- anm89 5y agoI made a similar app a while back. I threw it back up on heroku this morning https://nomadsunfinder.herokuapp.com/ https://nomadsunfinder.herokuapp.com/
- programmertote 5y agoThank you for sharing this nifty work of yours. I wonder if it's possible to give a score based on all-year-round and a few specific criteria that the user care about. For example, I personally found that I'm the most comfortable when the temperature is 23-26 C and humidity around 30-40%. If I could search for cities in the US which meets the above criteria (temperature and humidity) for as many month as possible in a year, that'd be a very useful addition to this already-impressive work. Again, this is just a suggestion in case you pick this up again to develop more features. :) Thank you for sharing.
- anm89 5y agoMuch appreciated! The issue with this app is that because there is so much underlying data, doing anything that isn't automated becomes a major chore very quickly. All of the underlying data was automatically scraped, and then automatically scored. I agree there is absolutely way more you could do with this data set. The subjectivity of the scoring system is definitely one thing that would be nice to remove to some degree. Unfortunately when i put it up I didn't get much of a response so I didn't ever put more time in it after the initial week I spent developing it. One day when things quiet down I'd like to come back to it. The source is private for now but if by any chance you wanted to add functionality I'd be happy to give you access to the repo. It's a rails app.
- nazrulmum10 5y agoIts helpful for travelers
- Aeolun 5y agoSweet, seems I should be living in Abu Dhabi. An abundance of sun, a balmy 40 degrees and practically no rain. It’d be nice to have humidity info too.

- gustavorg 5y agoAt least the data for Caracas is wrong. In August we are in the 22°- 30° range similar to june.
- thissuchness 5y agoIn my opinion air quality is another big factor in outdoors comfort. This makes L.A.'s solid green line pretty suspect to me, just in case anyone was planning on moving there based on this.
