"Shrooms" are illegal here and I'm skeptical about eating "discovered" fungus grown in cow feces, particularly in raw/uncooked form. I'm not a chemist, either, so extracting psilocybin seems daunting.
What's a safe way to consume psilocybin from such a "discovery", in terms of psychoactive dosage and for avoiding unwanted ancillary poisons?
- redisman 5y agoThe dark web or travel to a state that is doing experimental treatments and has lax laws. Oregon and Denver have state/local laws decriminalizing them at least
- straw_hat 5y agoCan you elaborate? I won't make an illicit online purchase. Prefer instead to consume safely from a post-rain visit to a manure pile. edit: comment I replied to initially just said "the dark web" and the additional info was added after I replied.
- redisman 5y agoIt would be illicit purchases so I guess that’s out
- cartoonworld 5y agoYou can make a totally legal purchase of microspscopy specimens in the form of millions of cubenses spores in a sterile solution, several of them for about Fifty dollars of whichever currency we are discussing. They will helpfully include a microscope slide so you can enjoy your microscopy hobby immediately. It may be the case that when accidentally applied to a sterile growth medium, such as brown rice flour in a mason jar which was autoclaved in a regular pressure cooker for about 45 minutes, that after a few weeks the microscopy specimens will provide you with a new way to look at the world. Be careful though, It's really easy to inadvertently drop the mason jars face down in a plastic tub that you use to store perlite that you bought from walmart, dislodging this nondescript white rubbery substance onto some tinfoil squares or better yet a metal rack suspended just above the perlite. If you forget about the mistake you made with the mason jars and the plastic tub for a few more weeks, and the conditions remain humid enough somehow, you will sometimes find a complex biological reaction has occurred in the chamber. Its important not to harvest them just before the veil is broken, chopping them up with a sharp knife and stirring them into a pot of water set to a low simmer for about 20-30 minutes. In any case, if you discover that you, despite your best efforts, have still made this error, you should strain the chopped peices out and discard the water, or "tea", in a way that conforms to local and federal law. Some lemon juice and/or Numi brand morroccan mint tea helps with the disposal. You might need some friends to help with that part though, it can take about 6-8 hours. You'll likely have a little trouble sleeping after all that work, so make sure to leave the next day open. I also recommend getting a bit stoned first using recreationaly legal marijuana.
- jk888 5y agoThis is hilarious.
- pmoriarty 5y agoI just watched a nice video from the Portland Psychedelic Society about this: [1] Unfortunately, it sounds like way too much work for me.. and I'm too paranoid to risk going to jail for this hobby.. but I wish all those who do this the best. It's probably a lot safer and definitely cheaper than getting your mushrooms on the black market. [1] - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0gJTeTT-pE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0gJTeTT-pE
- cartoonworld 5y agoIn a world where you get busted for a shoebox of mushrooms, you might be better off on the inside. But, I'll certainly grant that the Drug War isn't well known for its ROI. You can always take a nice vacation to Jamaica. https://www.mycomeditations.com/ https://www.mycomeditations.com/ (edit: website appears broken, currently. How unfortunate!)
- cartoonworld 5y agothe mycomeditations website is back up. This practice is totally legal in Jamaica, and mycomeditations specializes in group mediated psilocybin experiences and, rather importantly, includes integration discussions afterwards in a calm environment appropriate for self exploration.
- pmoriarty 5y ago"Prefer instead to consume safely from a post-rain visit to a manure pile." For that, I highly recommend watching Alan Rockefeller's videos on psilocybin mushroom identification: [1] [2] [1] - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pInqVRRva7M https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pInqVRRva7M [2] - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcL-7u80kjs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcL-7u80kjs
- 93po 5y agothey're legal to grow in Denver now I believe. Take a trip to find a person who grows in Denver and buy them. they're typically grown in very sterile ways that dont even involve manure - just grains or rice.
- twiceaday 5y agoPsychedelic tourism to places where it's legal.
- taneq 5y agoWorked for me, I gave them a shot many years ago in Amsterdam and it was quite the experience.
- marcrosoft 5y agoIn general people grow mushrooms at home on brown rice flower. They are not usually found looking under cow pies or synthesized. Growing is usually illegal but obtaining spores is often legal at least in the U.S.
- shiftpgdn 5y agoCheck out the “unclebens” subreddit. You order spores and spray them into an instant rice bag. Lots of advice and guidance there. Spores are perfectly legal to ship and buy.
- sergiomattei 5y agoNot OP, but this sounds interesting, thanks!
- loeg 5y agoSpores aren't legal to ship to all US states. E.g., California forbids them.
- staticman2 5y agoSpores are legal to ship and buy in most states but not to grow. A paranoid person might expect you'd end up on a police watchlist and they'd get a warrant to search your house to see if you ever grew the spores. What's people's comfort level on this?
- meowkit 5y agoI literally today just finished drying and capsuling my first flush of uncle ben tek grown cubensis. Its really not a big deal. 100% comfortable. Note: am on the west coast.
- pmoriarty 5y ago"Its really not a big deal. 100% comfortable." You're not the one who's going to be going to jail if someone else gets arrested for growing their own. Still, I'd be curious to see a state-by-state breakdown of how many people get arrested each year for growing psilocybin mushrooms for personal use.
- 93po 5y agoi did some searching online for people getting busted in my state and really only found articles of dudes doing it at industrial scales in their garage. i dont think i found a single news article about someone's house getting raided and going to prison over some tubs in their closet. which isnt to say it doesn't happen, it just seems really unlikely. if you dont yap about it and your landlord isnt a nosy person you'll be fine. getting caught very likely means jail/prison time though.
- wsatb 5y agoMake it into a tea. I've consumed mushrooms as a tea and raw and definitely enjoy the tea much more. Tastes better, the recipe I've had uses honey, and is much easier on the stomach (if you easily get nauseous, this is the way to go).
- sneak 5y agoI did this once, and the resulting anaphylaxis (while tripping!) informed me of the fact that I am allergic to psilocybin-containing mushrooms. Test a paste on a patch of skin, first. :)
- elevaet 5y agoWow that would be quite the situation. Do you have anaphylactic reactions to any other fungi?
- deepzn 5y agoThis company Compass Pathways is one that is doing clinical trials for psilocybin treatments, hopefully they can be purchased with a prescription sometime this decade or in a few years. More info from the company: "We received FDA Breakthrough Therapy designation for our programme of psilocybin therapy in treatment-resistant depression in 2018. We are conducting a randomised controlled phase IIb study of psilocybin therapy in 216 patients with treatment-resistant depression in 22 sites across Europe and North America" "We are working as quickly as we can to develop psilocybin therapy for people suffering with treatment-resistant depression. We expect to report data from our phase IIb by the end of the year. If the results are positive, we then plan to begin a phase III study in 2022. Details of the sites that will be involved in this phase will be provided here as soon as they have been approved." https://compasspathways.com/our-research/psilocybin-therapy/about-psilocybin-therapy/ https://compasspathways.com/our-research/psilocybin-therapy/...

- troelsSteegin 5y agoA different clinical trial, sponsored by Usona, is registered at clinicaltrials.gov - https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT03866174 https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT03866174
- jk888 5y agoHome cultivators rarely use a manure substance. If they do, it is pasteurized.
- max_hammer 5y agoI used legal analog variant 1P-LSD. But you have to be very careful with dosage, as it is measured in micrograms. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1P-LSD https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1P-LSD
- straw_hat 5y agoThis seems to be a variant of LSD-25, not psilocybin.
- sparkie 5y agoYou can go out and forage for wild mushrooms without digging through cow dung. "Mushrooms grow on cow dung" is true, but not the whole truth. It's part propaganda to discourage people from eating them. Mushrooms simply grow anywhere that is very moist and nutrient rich. Cow manure happens to fit the bill quite well - and there's a high probability that spores will find their way to the dung, because the cow grazes large areas of a field, and the spores it eats survive digestion. However, you can find mushrooms simply by inspecting the fields yourself. They're typically found in the bottom of a valleys where moisture is high, on fields where animals have grazed. Also in the woods, under pine trees, and they grow on plant beds covered in wood chip (non-bark). Also, even where they do grow on dung, the part of the mushroom you eat (the fruiting body) grows above the dung. The mycelium grows inside the dung, which you don't eat. You break off the fruit at the stem, without touching the dungs. You can wash the fruits before eating or drying them.
