1989 Yugo GVL: Performance Testing
- temporallobe 5y agoIsn’t it funny that an extremely underpowered, poorly-equipped car is slow? Hilarious.
- Scoundreller 5y agoSolvable problems with enough resources and engineering time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fu75U_zqJZY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fu75U_zqJZY
- CodeWriter23 5y agoYep. And an engine swap.
- Scoundreller 5y agoThat’s under resources, but yeah, I forgot time.
- sparrish 5y ago> 0-75 (sec): did not reach 75 mph in 1/4-mile HA. I love it. It's like taking a VW beetle and removing one of the spark plugs.
- ilamont 5y agoDisappointingly, it won't do a burnout. A friend of mine had two Yugos in the late 1980s and was able to achieve a short burnout on one of them. It might have involved jacking up the car, or holding up the rear bumper while someone else revved it up (He had the height and physique of a Kobold) They were so cheap in every sense of the word. Sticker price was like $4000 or $5000 IIRC for the base model with nothing included.
- sensanaty 5y ago$4000!!? Total rip off! Only slightly joking, though I seriously cannot imagine spending that much on a Yugo lol
- RantyDave 5y agoI had a fiat 500 for a while. Rear engined, rear wheel drive, tyres like four rubber coated biscuits ... you can drift those bastards. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xwvh50O1SEs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xwvh50O1SEs
- julianz 5y agoAnd don't forget that the lights at the bottom of the speedo read LIGHTS GEN FUEL OIL, so if you really pegged it out on a downhill run with the wind behind you, you were travelling at the speed of LIGHT(s)...
- tonyedgecombe 5y agoThe Yugo was based on the design of the Fiat 127. I owned several of these including a 127 Sport that had a massive 70 HP. It doesn't sound like much but it was a huge amount of fun to drive.
- litoE 5y agoA man walks into an auto parts store and says "Can I get a rear-view mirror for my Yugo?" The clerk thinks for a minute and then says "Seems like a fair trade to me".
- jhbadger 5y agoThis a version of an earlier Trabant (East German car of dubious reliability) joke, but I suppose it applies to other similar cars like the Yugo. Other jokes are "Why does [car make X] have heated rear windows? To keep your hands warm while pushing it!" And "When does [car make X] reach its top speed? When it is being towed!"
- foobarian 5y agoWhy do Albanian [or insert your known-for-poor-quality-cars country here] cars have windshield wipers on the inside? Because the drivers go "phbbbrrrrrrrrrrrr..." (raspberry-like spitting sound)

- DonaldFisk 5y agoIf the Yugo was as bad as the joke suggests, how did so many of them outlast the country they were built in?

- gbronner 5y agoThe Geo metro had similar specs. It got 55hp from 3 cylinders, but also lacked a tach. 200 lbs lighter, but the wheels were smaller. I got mine up to about 90mph on a long downhill section of interstate, but wouldn't want to race anything else apart from a bike
- CodeWriter23 5y agoI believe you misspelled bicycle kind sir.

- cout 5y agoI loved my Metro. Got it for $500 and put $100 into a cylinder head rebuild. The sound of that 3 cylinder revving up is truly beautiful. They definitely weren't set up for racing -- the whole front of the chassis would bend under hard braking. That hasn't stopped anyone from trying, though. Perhaps the most inpressive group ever to race a Metro is the Knoxvegas Lowballers, who race in the 24 Hours of Lemons. They swapped a V6 from a Ford Contour and made the car rear engine and rear wheel drive. There aren't very many cars on the track who can keep up with a car with that power to weight ratio. It's a beautiful machine.
- tclancy 5y ago“ We didn't experience any starvation from fuel slosh (old-school stability control).” Saved the best for last.
- pram 5y agoYugo hot hatch should have been a thing. It already had fuel injection. Slap a turbo in there, would have been an instant classic.
- nl 5y ago> The best 155-foot stopping distance is 10 feet shorter than new. As much as I'd like to credit my spectacular driving skills it's likely the result of a few decades of tire development. That's pretty interesting really. Good work tyre engineers!
- potta_coffee 5y agoYugos had Fiat engines in them. They got a bad rap when they were shipped out with valve clearances not setup - this was supposed to be done at the dealership. Dealers commonly sold the cars without doing the initial and essential setup / maintenance and the car was blamed.
- underdown 5y agoThis was my first car. It had a push button start and got 45mpg highway.
- sebastien_b 5y agoThis YT video I recently watched on the history of the Yugo is interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDJQoGJFO6Q https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDJQoGJFO6Q
