"Document your meetings" - ugh I'm still surprised 20 years into my career at the amount of times people hold a meeting and DON'T TAKE ANY MINUTES!!! I recently asked someone, "Do you not normally take minutes?" His response, "I just generally keep it in my head." I thought, "What about the other 10 people on this call? You (foolishly) assume they have the same photographic recall? I certainly don't!"
People - document your meetings! It takes a few minutes. And it will save your ass down the line when some inevitable squabble arises over what people "agreed to work on" but there is no paper trail to settle the argument!
- mcherm 5y agoThis is my superpower. When I attend meetings I take notes. I'm willing to share those notes with anyone who needs them. I look back at my notes to recall details or find key links and figures. This makes me a significantly better engineer and subject matter expert.
- thrower123 5y agoIt would be a worthwhile investment to pay an administrative assistant (or, actually, stenographer) solely to sit in on meetings and take notes. One would think that this ought to be automatic these days, since we've got speech-to-text that mostly works, and ubiquitous meeting recording, and yet...
