99% Invisible Acquired by Stitcher
- jfengel 5y agoI listen to a ton of podcasts for free, and I've been waiting for them to start switching over Stitcher, or something other than hoping I'll throw money at them on Patreon (which I do) or purchase the occasional mattress/meditation app/socks. 99PI is a fantastic podcast: fascinating, gorgeously produced, and never fails to intrigue. I wouldn't necessarily mind paying for it through Stitcher, though I hope that the app is as good as the one I already use (Pocket Casts).
- gangstead 5y agoThat's my biggest complaint with premium podcasts. They lock you into using their inferior app.
- Wowfunhappy 5y agoExactly. Even worse, if you listen to more than one podcast like this from different companies, you have to use multiple apps. They really shouldn't even be called Podcasts. Just like how I wouldn't call something an email newsletter if it didn't show up in my normal email client.
- lovegoblin 5y agoThe very next tweet in the linked thread: > The same 99pi crew are going to make the show, we’re our own editorial unit, and show will be still be available anywhere to everyone.
- MBCook 5y agoThat’s the case for this podcast. For now. I too love 99PI but if I ever have to use the Stitcher app I’ll drop it in a hot second. Same goes for any other podcast. Stitcher, Spotify, NPR, Apple, anyone. If I can’t use the app I like, it’s not a podcast and I won’t go through the effort. There are too many other good podcasts waiting in the wings.
- crossroadsguy 5y agoThere was this awesome Indian podcast (Intersection) which moved to Audible and now even the producers are waiting for the contract to be over. They have given up.
- anitil 5y agoI was initially concerned about what this meant for Radiotopia and PRX, but he actually addresses this later in the thread. There's a lot going on in podcasting, and in one of the linked articles Roman actually addresses it - "What does it mean that Facebook is getting into audio? Or that Apple is changing the ‘subscribe’ button to a ‘follow’ button? I don’t know and I don’t want to figure it out. I feel at sea in this business in a way that I haven’t up to this point." Worried I might have to subscribe to SiriusXM. What's your favorite episode?
