There is a difference between indifference and dispassion. Because of the author's long career and varied experiences, he is able to see that most issues are not black and white. The problem is that high school kids are not academically dispassionate; they are not equipped to see deviations from their orthodoxy as anything but sinful.
People should be able to live and work with people who are academically dispassionate; no one is perfect and there are worse sins in the world. Indeed, I believe in the benefits of diversity: communities need people who can face emotionally charged issues head-on and come up with new ideas even if unpopular.
