Ah yes, just lock people in their apartments against their will and they cannot infect other people, genius
- Fricken 6y agoWell, yeah. Hundreds of thousands of people would have died otherwise, like they did in America. Duh.
- ahelwer 6y agoOption one: Pay people to stay home, deliver them supplies & food, call them daily for medical checkup. Three weeks later everyone is free. If community spread is ever detected again, perform a similar citywide lockdown and test everyone (in a city of tens of millions of people) three times. The bureaucrat responsible for overseeing that city is fired. Option two: A year+ of half-assed rolling lockdowns with ever-receding end date, zero support, and a 9/11's worth of deaths every day. No public figure faces any consequences whatsoever. But you can go to Applebees!
- tinus_hn 6y agoUnfortunately option one is the fantasy solution that doesn’t actually work. It has been tried. It doesn’t work.
- ahelwer 6y agoOption one is China's & Vietnam's strategy for combating the virus, which has been extremely effective. Parts of it were also implemented in nearby non-communist countries such as Taiwan.
- EdwinLarkin 6y agoWhy is advocating for violation of human rights not a bannable offense?
- ahelwer 6y agoPlease explain how quarantine violates human rights, I would love to hear this.
- EdwinLarkin 6y agoHave you read the declaration on human rights?
- ipsocannibal 6y agoThe countries where its generally accepted that the government has dictatorial power to imprison at will used its imprisoning prowess to beat a virus and lauded it as a model to be replicated. Good to know.

- ipsocannibal 6y agoAnd yet the US doesn't view more prison as the solution to the problem. Granted the Chinese model works but what do you have to lose to achieve it? How about we ask the residents of Hong Kong? They must be super-excited to have the superior Chinese model thrust upon them just in the nick of time.

- nradov 6y agoPay which people to stay home? Obviously not the ones delivering supplies and food, or utilities workers, or farmers, or emergency services, or plumbers, or anyone else involved in keeping society running on a day to day basis. Your suggestion is just totally disconnected from reality.
- ahelwer 6y agoMy suggestion is literally reality in several countries. You are correct there are people who go around delivering the food & supplies or providing medical care. They are given appropriate PPE & training.
- ipsocannibal 6y agoOption one sounds great theoretically. Which counties have successfully implemented those policies?
- ahelwer 6y agoChina and Vietnam. Taiwan to a lesser extent.
- ipsocannibal 6y agoAnd Taiwan is an island and is there by much easier to secure. New Zealand's model achieved similar outcomes.
- ipsocannibal 6y agoYou mean two countries with the some of the worst human rights records, China is literally committing genocide as we speak, used the power to imprison to beat back a virus. Seems like a hammer looking for a nail or a broken clock is right twice a day type situation.
- ahelwer 6y agoOkay, then take that lesson from them. This isn't a referendum on their entire system of government. It's a demonstration of how much we have failed by comparison. "Power to imprison" has nothing to do with it, or the US would be crushing it.
- EdwinLarkin 6y agoThis is disgusting. You literally advocate for governments to strip people of their human rights.
- war1025 6y agoAmerica's version: Conveniently remove your own relatives from nursing homes and long term care facilities, then institute forced lock downs and mandate that they accept Coronavirus patients. The people can't get out, but do your best to guarantee that the virus will get in.
