> hard-right politicians in the Conservative Party and Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party.
It’s an interesting article, but there are no hard-right politicians in either of those parties, unless you consider everyone right of Tony Blair to be a borderline fascist.
- zpeti 6y agoYou've got it right. Far right IS anyone right of Tony Blair. (according to these people)
- estaseuropano 6y agoWhat would be hard right if not the nationalist brexit party and the literal right wing of the Tories? If you look in the national context or in comparison to any EU country they fall in the hard right, with farage certainly on the far right. When they were still in the EU parliament Cameron even split from the conservative group (Merkel, Sarkozy) to found a new more right group jointly with the far right polish government party and a few nationalist groups from other countries, with Farage leading an even more right group jointly with the French Front National. There's also the literal Nazis/BNP on the further fringe, but in any context Farage and the right side of the Tories fall on the hard/far right
- krona 6y agoWhat would be hard right if not the nationalist brexit party Compared to what? The Brexit Party has several ex-members of the Revolutionary Communist Party.
- pjc50 6y agoThey are, bizarrely, hard-right these days; they pivoted straight round the horseshoe in the mid-90s. Claire Fox is now a baroness, which tells you exactly how revolutionary or communist she is.
- underslung 6y agoOk. So what would constitute as hard/far left? Under your definitions' it seems like being a nationalist (believing in the nation-state and sovereignty) & white supremacy are synonymous — which obviously they are not, unless you are suggesting all nationalists are racist or something.
- Symbiote 6y agoThe people left of the Green party, or left of Corbyn. The communist party, Socialist Labour Party (borderline), Respect. The people advocating a ban on eating meat, private cars etc.
- dariosalvi78 6y agoOnly in the wildest dreams of Salvini or Le Pen would the current politics of the Tories be imaginable. They are, by all means and as matter of fact, a hard right party ruling one of the biggest countries in Europe. Farage is just a bit more theatrical, but they're basically the same.
- vfclists 6y agoThis hard right party managed to get a vaccine program started while the left wing EU were quibbling over details. Thank God for hard right parties.
- ginko 6y agoHow is the EU left wing? Most governments in the EU are conservative and so is the head of the EC.
- vfclists 6y agoWill just "right wing" then be a good way to describe most EU governments, or "soft right wing"?
- dariosalvi78 6y agoIf efficiency is your main concern, I would suggest you to live a dictatorship. They tend to be much more efficient than democracies.
- Veen 6y agoCould you highlight some current Tory policies you consider “hard right”?
- dariosalvi78 6y agoRacism, bigotry, nationalism, elitism. Examples: immigration policies, actually since Theresa May was at Home Office are among the most restrictive in the continent. Austerity and the destruction of welfare. And, of course, the gem, the cherry on the cake, which wasn't even officially supported by the party, but that the party has had no minor hesitation on adopting as own: Brexit. No other country in Europe has such a similar agenda in Europe, not to this extent. I fled the country a couple of years ago and was undoubtedly one of the best decisions of my life.
