FOSDEM 2021 online – Feb 6/7 – No registration necessary

Having attended every FOSDEM since 2001, this year feels very strange. FYI, to accommodate more people from the US a number of devrooms (tracks, in the parlance of other conferences) are running more in the afternoons than the morning.

Not affiliated, but I was there in the last offline versions and looking forward to this online one. I will miss the Belgium beers though.

It did not seem obvious to me, here is more details on how to join the livestream (+ chatroom): https://fosdem.org/2021/news/2021-02-01-attending-fosdem-2021/ https://fosdem.org/2021/news/2021-02-01-attending-fosdem-202... There is supposed to be a Matrix chatroom for each room with a video widget.

A huge thank you to all the volunteers for making this happen, and to the Matrix folks for their support. I went to my first FOSDEM 15 years ago and would have been very sad if it hadn't happened in some form in 2021. It won't be the same without having to squeeze through packed corridors, randomly bumping into old friends from the past and meeting up for evening beers and food at the excellent Belgian pubs. Still, I'm looking forward to some great talks. Question for the organizers: with everything being online this year, should we expect the recordings to be put up promptly or should we attend the talks at their scheduled times if we don't want to wait too long to see them?

  All the talks have been pre-recorded and already uploaded. So, yes, this year they will be available even faster. The advantage of attending the scheduled time slot is that the speakers will be present to answer live QnA sessions with the audience in every talk.

I've wanted to attend FOSDEM for years, but because I'm usually short on time at this time of the year and the logistics I haven't so far. I'm glad that I'll finally be able to go, but am still unsure of the socialization story (my main reason to attend conferences). They say there will be chat rooms for each track, but will there also be (official) voice/video chats? Text seems like it would be pretty cumbersome and non-personal and my online event experience has shown that official Jitsi/Mumble/BBB rooms are the nicest.
