>Racism is the marginalization or oppression of people of color based on a socially constructed racial hierarchy that privileges white people
Fascinating that their definition of racism is explicitly racist.
In fairness to Apple, they cited the ADL as the source for their glossary of terms, and it is indeed taken verbatim from there:

- DC1350 6y agoAlso just not really appropriate for a global company.. Isn't their EU HQ in Ireland? They should know better than this
- pjc50 6y agoWhy not?
- HarryHirsch 6y agoOne word: Londonderry.
- DoofusOfDeath 6y agoCan you elaborate? I'm interested in what you're saying, but after some quick Googling I still don't understand the significance of "Londonderry".
- HarryHirsch 6y agoWell, the European headquarters of Apple are in Ireland, and Derry is still suffering heavily from the Unionist-Loyalist conflict. Unemployment over twice the average in Northern Ireland, no side wants the other to get ahead, and no hope that anything will improve anytime soon. The Good Friday Agreement hasn't arrived in the town, over 20 years later.
- DC1350 6y agoThe concept of a singular “white” is an American invention which ignores the fact that intra-white oppression happens all over the world. In the UK Irish people were traditionally oppressed, now Eastern European immigrants are treated poorly. In Canada there’s an ongoing power struggle between white Anglo Canada (historically, now it’s multicultural) and white Québécois. Focusing on racism defined as anything that’s good for white people makes it sound like the real problem is inequality between races and not oppression and inequality by itself. It also completely disregards racism between groups of POC which is a much bigger global problem.
- thyrsus 6y agoNot by the definition they use.
- api 6y agoBy that definition the Chinese persecution of the Uighurs or the Rwandan genocide were not racist. Racism only ever existed in Western civilization in the last 500 years. Do people not realize this kind of bullshit plays right into "replacement theory" fascist conspiracy propaganda? It's doubly odd for this to be the ADL's definition. The majority of people would identify Jews as white. The only people I've heard explicitly state otherwise are Nazis. So for most people this definition would exclude anti-semitism from being racism.
- HarryHirsch 6y agoThe imagery on the website is going to be well received in any marginalized white community in Arkansas, as will be the references to Atlanta and Detroit. It's finest virtue signalling.
- jariel 6y agoOr the Latino community, which is marginalized and literally bigger than the African American community and constantly ignored in all of these initiatives. It's really mind blowing frankly that every single time the issue arises it's about 'one group' and never the rest. Yes - there are special historical conditions, surely. But Latino America is massive and almost completely unrepresented in most sports (outside baseball), pop culture, music, awards, politics etc.. It's an odd dynamic.
- theklr 6y agoBad Bunny is a megastar and chooses not to claim the full superstardom. JLo performed at the inauguration and was with her partner Alex Rodriguez a successful MLB player. PepsiCo’s president is also of Latin descent. This doesn’t have to be an either or scenario as it’s made to seem.
- DC1350 6y agoI don’t think there’s a single poor Latino person in the world that believes their life is better because they are better represented by pop stars at the inauguration. What are you even trying to say?
- jariel 6y agoBad Bunny is barely famous, not remotely approaching the status of mega star. If you don't believe me, check out Google Trends and compare to other, actual stars. JLo is one of the only mainstream Latina stars and therefore gets the shoe-in invite to thinks like 'inauguration performances' because who else can they chose? Bruno Mars? Who else? Even Hispaic/Latino winners at the Oscars are almost all from Mexico or Spain, with almost zero actual American representation. There are 'massive global stars' from the Latin of course world but they generally originate from South America. Latino/Hispanic USA has about the representation of Asian America in mainstream culture. There are quite large sections of culture dedicated specifically to that group - news, entertainment, music etc. but it exists within it's own bubble.
- dgb23 6y agoThat definition of racism manages to be both too narrow and too imprecise at the same time. Completely neglects geographical, cultural and historical context. The Wikipedia article on racism is much more precise and inclusive. The first paragraph makes for a useful definition. Most importantly it doesn't insult the reader's intelligence or their hardship when they where victims of racism that doesn't fit the ADL definition.
