The otherday I was setting up Wine on Debian to play Diablo2, it was really painful to get all the 32bits i386 version for each wine dependencies ... Once Wine was installed it worked almost flawlessly, but those i386 libs ...
Is there a way to get Wine as a single binary / docker or something that is easy to install?
Edit: As for why it was really difficult is because of that: https://wiki.winehq.org/Debian https://wiki.winehq.org/Debian ( The WineHQ packages for Debian 10 and later require libfaudio0 as a dependency. Since the distro does not provide it for Debian 10, users of that version can download libfaudio0 packages from the OBS. See https://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=32192 https://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=32192 for details. ) That bloody libfaudio0.
- ciupicri 6y agoIsn't Debian supposed to take care of all dependencies?
- MayeulC 6y agoMaybe they didn't enable multilib (aka multiarch on Debian)? https://wiki.debian.org/Multiarch/HOWTO https://wiki.debian.org/Multiarch/HOWTO
- bartvk 6y agoIsn't that CodeWeaver's version?
- confiq 6y agoCodeWeave is another software, no?
- michaelmrose 6y agoThey are a company that makes crossover a solution to install manage and run windows software like playonlinux. It costs money but they also contribute to wine.
- gpderetta 6y agoThey are the main Wine contributors and I think Wine BDFL work for them.
- codetrotter 6y agoI remember having a bit of difficulty a few years backs too in order to get Wine installed and ready. According to https://wiki.debian.org/Wine https://wiki.debian.org/Wine however it should on x86_64 in theory be as simple as the following in order to install both the 64 and 32-bit versions: sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386 && sudo apt update sudo apt install \ wine \ wine32 \ wine64 \ libwine \ libwine:i386 \ fonts-wine Notice in particular the dpkg --add-architecture i386. This enables multiarch.
- chromaton 6y agoTry PlayOnLinux.
- JoeyBananas 6y agoLast week I played that exact game (Diablo 2) with playonlinux
- troyready 6y agoThe answer to this is Lutris - https://lutris.net/ https://lutris.net/ It's a launcher that manages the dependencies needed for each individual application (setting up dedicated wine prefixes, installing any dotnet packages, etc) Install it, then use the appropriate install script from the website: https://lutris.net/games/diablo-ii/ https://lutris.net/games/diablo-ii/
- paulryanrogers 6y agoHow does this differ from PlayOnLinux?
- BayesStreet 6y agoThey basically do the same thing, but lutris is much nicer with a bigger suite of options.
- Kaze404 6y agoWorth noting that Lutris' script repository is iffy at best. Moderators hold all the power on the platform, which means they can (and will, as they have in the past) replace entire scripts at random if they believe they have a better solution (regardless of whether it is or not, or even if it works). Just wanted to point that out before anyone sees this great project and decides to contribute a script to an unknown game.
- shmerl 6y agoI usually don't have such problem. For Debian testing I'm using WineHQ builds from their repo. It also pulls all needed dependencies. https://wiki.winehq.org/Debian https://wiki.winehq.org/Debian And as a side note, better don't use Debian stable for gaming. It's not a desktop distro. Debian testing / unstable is a way better option.
- h_anna_h 6y agoYou can get the wine packages from the official debian repo without any such issues. Edit, apparently Debian 10 is buster rather than bullseye, which makes me wonder, why have you not upgraded?
- _wldu 6y agoI'm not a gamer, but after work COVID lock-down boredom caused me to get a few old games working with Wine. Solitaire and Chess only go so far. Tribes 2 and Test Drive 5 work great with Wine and are fun to tinker with even though they are 20+ years old now.
- jack_pp 6y agoSteam has a lot of games that work well on linux. I play dota and have no issues. Hackmud works well too but I didn't get into it much.
- acomjean 6y agoThere is a online database of games from steam that run on linux. I don’t game much but they ones I’ve tried have all worked for me https://www.protondb.com/ https://www.protondb.com/ Proton being the name of the wine fork by valve.
- Ericson2314 6y agoNixOS has 32-bit versions of everything, and some useful shortcuts to enable for steam or wine.
