I've stopped using any food delivery apps in favour of calling direct to the restaurant and then walking or driving to pick up my order myself.
As the article describes we've ended up in a position where so much money is being poured into a business where nobody is happy.
My food usually arrives cold or messy, the restaurant has been fleeced with fees, the rider has risked life and limb cycling it over for a pittance and the delivery app company has still lost money. Stop the madness.
- shrimp_emoji 6y agoI use Instacart/Prime Now for grocery delivery and always tip highly while hoping that a more humane near-future of drones and UBI can eliminate the uncomfortable reality that me getting groceries conveniently requires a miserable underclass who would otherwise not be doing that job.
- smeej 6y agoWhat job do you think they would be doing instead? And why do you think they aren't doing that job now? I ask this sincerely. I've worked gig-economy jobs when and only when they were what I judged to be my best option at the time. When I've found other opportunities that had a mix of compensation/flexibility/benefits I preferred, I've switched to do that instead. My experience strongly suggests to me that the same is true of most gig workers--they're choosing the best of the options available to them. I don't see how removing their current best option somehow makes a better one appear that wasn't there before.
- headsupernova 6y agoEveryone is always choosing the best option available to them... The point is that there's no reason the world should be set up in such a way that it's their only or best option.
- burnthrow 6y agoHave you considered just going to the grocery store, that seems to be a simpler solution than drones + UBI
