Correct technical term is, AFAIU, "quantum supremacy". Ability to do computations using quantum computer which would take infeasibly long time on classic computer.
- mdoms 6y agoThis is addressed in the article.
- ahelwer 6y agoTerm of art has been changed from supremacy to advantage, to avoid evoking e.g. white supremacy. It's pretty hard to find a benign usage of supremacy actually.
- selimthegrim 6y agosupremacy of law and order; supremacy of constitution; maybe more commonly used in non-racist sense is paramountcy (but has colonial overtones)
- lupire 6y agoThere's "quantum supremacy".
- 6nf 6y agoReally, is that the reason? Do you have any sources explaining this? Seems insane, 'supremacy' just makes me think of Jason Bourne movies, not racism.
- ahelwer 6y agoHere you go, letter published in Nature explaining the reasoning: https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-019-03781-0 https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-019-03781-0 It really isn't a big deal, the field is trying to be more welcoming to people. Not sure why this is "insane".

- beervirus 6y agoIt’s insane to kowtow to the people who get offended by this.
- ahelwer 6y agoIt isn't kowtowing, it's wanting to make your field more welcoming so you maybe get to work with a broader set of people? Research scientists tend to be quite a bit more egalitarian than your average corpo engineer.
- unishark 6y agoI'd say research is far more hierarchical and non-egalitarian than industry engineering. It's all about ranking of people based on reputation, and trying to get your name on things first like explorers trying to get places named after themselves.
- superdisk 6y agoAuthoritarians and policing language under the guise of inclusivity. Name a more iconic duo.
- 6nf 6y agoComplete insanity.
- tromp 6y agoJust wait until they rename it to The Bourne Advantage
- 6nf 6y agoWhite Advantageists
- FartyMcFarter 6y agoHow long until it's not OK to use "quantum advantage" because it could harm "disadvantaged" people?
- ahelwer 6y agoProbably a long time. Anyway, language changes! Sorry to inform you that the dictionary which existed the year you were born was only a descriptive record, not a prescriptive tome crystalizing the language forevermore. What a burden this must be for you!
- FartyMcFarter 6y ago> Probably a long time. I'm not sure about that. Some companies are already discouraging use of terms such as "sanity", "dummy", or "blind" [1]. Discouraging words that can be somehow linked to social disadvantage seems like a "logical" next step. - dekhn 6y agothere's really no reason to speak like this, it makes you look like a jerk.
