Pornhub Releases Statements About Credit Cards, New York Times Allegations
- ncr100 6y agoQUOTE - about child porn on different platforms: Pornhub also attached the figures provided by Internet Watch Foundation comparing CSAM found in other platforms: Facebook: 84,100,000 Instagram: 4,452,000 Twitter: 1,466,398 - You can navigate through the old reports near the top on the right hand side, adding up the totals from the last two years. Pornhub: 118
- IfOnlyYouKnew 6y agoIIRC, "child porn" wasn't the main point of the editorial. Revenge porn and other "amateur" pornography released without consent was.
- cblconfederate 6y agodoes facebook even remove revenge porn?
- meowtimemania 6y agoThey remove all forms of porn
- totony 6y agoSince FB isn't a porn website I'd assume they do. A similar question would be, does facebook remove defamation/libel/videos (or profiles) of you or impersonating you etc.
- prepend 6y agoThis actually seems pretty damning for pornhub as the 118 were reported by an external entity where Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are self reported and removed. So according to their own stats, pornhub has zero self reports. They describe a few technologies used and it seems reasonable that they would report how many times these technologies identified and removed content. That they aren’t presenting this data in their defense is not a good sign.
- meowface 6y agoExactly. I did a double-take at this "comparison": >Unverified users are now banned from uploading content — a policy no other platform has put in place, including Facebook, which reported 84 million instances of child sexual abuse material over the last three years. In comparison, the Internet Watch Foundation reported 118 incidents on Pornhub over the last three years.
- MeinBlutIstBlau 6y agoSo NYT essentially let an editor post a libelous piece of work now that has cost a company a major source of revenue? What are the odds this isn't going to turn into a lawsuit?
- staticautomatic 6y agoPretty good. Streisand effect.
- kelchm 6y agoThis is exactly what people mean when they say “fake news” in many cases. Not that the facts of a story are technically incorrect, but the way things are presented (or not presented) is intentionally designed to shift the readers perspective in a certain direction.
- just-juan-post 6y agoYep and same thing with "hoax".
- pault 6y agoReading the NY times article I wasn't sure whether to laugh or rage at how the author repeatedly equated videos with "teen" in the title and child sex abuse. I've been an avid consumer of porn since the early 1990s and nearly every movie has a "teen" in it who is certainly no younger than 25. So apparently all of that "sexy teen" porn I've watched over the years was CP.
- disown 6y agoIt's been my experience that criticizing the nyt is the easiest way to get downvoted and flagged. So brace yourself. The most privileged propaganda company in the world.
- btorretta 6y agoCritique of pornhub is coming from all sides this time, including national review.
- btorretta 6y agoyou mean pornhub users looking for child porn aren't reporting it to the proper authorities? that is shocking. it's also worthwhile to take all their stats at face value because they have such a strong track record of caring about anything other than a buck. next you'll tell me cigarette companies may have tried similar stunts in previous generations and I'll be equally shocked.
- NeutronStar 6y agoBecause Facebook doesn't care about anything other than a buck?
- mobileexpert 6y agoThe CSAM numbers are presented awkwardly. The FB numbers suggest FB is way worse, but the FB and Twitter numbers are platform reported rather than externally identified. FB and Twitter make more reports and publish more transparently. I’d also wager that reports = (all content #)(prevalence rate of CSAM)(detection sensitivity)*(reporting rate) and FB/TWTR probably have infinitely higher first terms, and better 3 and 4th terms in the equation.
- diebeforei485 6y agoPorn existed before PornHub did, and will continue to exist after. Cutting them off payment networks will not have any meaningful effects (except in the short term). On the bright side, people who pay for content are getting onboard the crypto train.
- runawaybottle 6y agoI think it could be a big deal because people use prepaid visa/MasterCard usually for those kind of subs.
- diebeforei485 6y agoThey'll either use cryptocurrencies now, or move to competing websites like OnlyFans.
- toyg 6y agoThis is going to be a boon for bitcoin exchanges and their likes. These will become “prepaid btc / monero cards” or something like that.
- colejohnson66 6y ago“Prepaid BTC” isn’t very useful when it’s so volatile. You buy a $100 prepaid card and tomorrow it’s worth $50. Sure, the amount of BTC would be the same, but it’s buying power would change too much too rapidly.
- oxygenjoe 6y agoHow much does a porn subscription cost? Something tells me the kind of person who pays for porn won't mind too much if they have to buy a little extra bitcoin sometimes.

- goatinaboat 6y agoIt's interesting to see how things are playing out now that attacking a company via its payment processor has been mainstreamed as an activist technique. Incidentally Pornhub is really a company called Mindgeek, so its tech employees can keep their resumes SFW. Worth knowing whether you are pro- or anti- Pornhub specifically or porn in general.
- toyg 6y ago“Activist”? This was spearheaded by the US government against Wikileaks.
- Clampower 6y agoWhat I find interesting about this whole pornhub discussion is that nobody is at all mentioning the vast amounts of videos with unwilling participants in them that are across sites like pornhub. Do you remember when the whole internet was outraged over reddit's creepshots subreddit? the amount of urinal spy, locker room spy and nudist beach spy videos on these sites is huge! Why does nobody care?
- nix23 6y agoAs a victim, you have to go public, you need the better lawyers then pornhub and some money reserves. If you succeed you stand even more in the public eyes and if you loose too.
- goatinaboat 6y agoDo you remember when the whole internet was outraged over reddit's creepshots subreddit? I expect it was the same people were white-knighting on Reddit in one window while simultaneously consuming this material on Pornhub in another.
