I agree with you - it is a point in his favor that he's at least trying to pull out of these wars. I think it was 2 years ago, he announced he was pulling out, and the media instantly went into panic mode, calling the actions reckless, attacking his decision. So I will give credit where credit is due. He's at least trying to pull out of the wars.
