A hint of new physics in polarized radiation from the early universe

- vlovich123 6y agoJust the other day we were supposed to be discussing the end of physics [1]. Glad rumors of its demise were grossly exaggerated. Getting insight into the source of dark energy is fantastic and exciting times. [1] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25208491 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25208491
- ape4 6y agoYeah, somebody famous need to make a "law" about that. The number of days from announcement of "end of physics" to a new discovery is directly proportional to how much coverage the announcement gets.
- yokaze 6y agoIf I remember correctly, when Einstein expressed his wish to study physics, he was discouraged by a physics professor, because he thought essentially everything fundamental was already discovered and there are only derivative laws left to be formulated.
- holstvoogd 6y agoto be fair, that entire article's premise is that 'the end of physics' is BS
- api 6y agoWe don’t even really know what gravity is and 90% or more of all matter is missing from our cosmological models but physics is over.
- dylan604 6y agoPart of me wants to believe that somebody misplaced a decimal way upstream so that we're on a goose chase looking for that missing matter. Partial credit though for showing your work.
- api 6y agoMy speculation is that there’s a bug in Microsoft Excel that is responsible for our inability to unify QM and relativity.

- lostmsu 6y agoThis is about quintessence. 2.5 sigma. One study gave negative result. So a bit premature.
- Pet_Ant 6y agoHence the word "hint". I think this article is meant that their is a discovery of a lead that has a not unreasonable chance of resulting in something exciting. This isn't a hall-of-famer, this is an upcoming prospect.

- contravariant 6y agoWell, 2.5 sigma is a bit weak to even call it a hint. There'd be no end to hints of new physics if we start including those results.
- steve76 6y agoThe universe was condensed in a singularity. It expanded. That condensed heat is still there just thinned out. Empty space has a temperature. That's what I think of when I hear about cosmic microwave background radiation. When I hear parity violation, I think of spin and beta decay. Even if the beta decay is the same, the way the nucleus is spinning means something completely different. And by spin, we mean a model of angular momentum of a quantum point: Heat transfers through conductive surfaces, convective mediums, and electromagnetic radiation. What's EM? Nature transferring heat by speeding up and slowing down clocks. It's easier for nature to slow down the watch, run a mile, and speed up the watch again, than it's just to keep the watch steady. Nature has no mind. It takes the easiest route like a pressure vessel pushes on all seals. You can say EM is heat transfer using time frequency as it's medium. White hot means relative clock ticks fast. Gravitational dark means relative clock ticks slow. Since something needs to charge up a little before EM'ing brighter, you have a finite start and end, you have a particle. That's the photon. The photon hits the entire surface at once, so frequency matters not intensity, and the internal voltage of the conductive object increases, that's the electron. So angular momentum and spin here means something completely counter-intuitive. It's a model, a mental shortcut, but plenty of room to hide applications in translation. When I hear polarization, I think of interference. This heat transfer through EM travels through a medium. That medium provides loss and transfers the EM into internal heat. How soon before we are looking at our own shadows on this? Side effects of lenses focusing across great distances? Cars going the same speed on the highway see a de-acceleration when they measure the speed against the road vs. the speed against another car. That's theory of gravity enough for me. Just replace those cars with what we know about electromagnetism.
