Games released before PS4 are no longer appearing in search on PlayStation.com

- slg 6y agoI love the irony in an Internet Archive link being need for this specific article because it happened to disappear from the internet.
- ce4 6y agoit didn't "disappear", HN's hug just is a bit overwhelming right now.
- slg 6y agoWell yeah, the site being overwhelmed made it unreachable. Or to put it another way, it disappeared.
- ricardo81 6y agoReminds of Monty Python Holy Grail credits, Those responsible for sacking the people who have just been sacked, have been sacked
- baobabKoodaa 6y agoI wish people would start releasing their static content with CDNs instead of burning money at expensive hosting solutions that don't scale.
- jmiskovic 6y agoExecutives in big company cutting costs for whatever is not making immediate profit. One of those moments when you come to understand how out of touch they are with their audience. Gamers are nostalgic breed and PS1/2/3 made many childhood memories. Nintendo knows to capitalize on their history far better than Sony or Microsoft.
- cbsmith 6y agoIt depends on what you mean by "out of touch they are their audience". They're pretty in touch with how the money is being spent.
- mulmen 6y agoSure, right now. But do they know why? Will their customers still be around for the PS6? Your comment is so shortsighted I can't tell if it is a parody.
- uCantCauseUCant 6y agoA locust is in touch with nature - but is it really in a sustainable relationship with nature. Local, spiking maxima, do not mean you are laying down long-term growth foundations, from which new endeavours can spearhead
- blackoil 6y agoOr they can go 'Disney' and really cash on nostalgia. You need not need keep everything alive, just smartly use Vault and Remakes.
- nix23 6y ago>Nintendo knows to capitalize on their history far better than Sony or Microsoft. Exactly, it's because Nintendo is a Toy-maker (in a good sense), but Microsoft and Sony are Technology Corporations, just look at that PlayStation Classic BS, they cannot even copy Nintendo.
- _the_inflator 6y agoExactly, and you could also add to this the current "trend" of Age of Empires, Warcraft, Command and Conquer.
- extrememacaroni 6y agoIsn't keeping history the job of the waybackmachine? Or an archival service in general.
- Cthulhu_ 6y ago"job" is putting it a bit harsh, they're providing a voluntary / community service, and it's not cheap. I'd like webpages to be pretty eternal, that is, statically rendered in a html file, put on a webserver somewhere that is maintained until perpetuity - you know, like the now famous Space Jam website. But in practice that doesn't happen because Reasons. I'm glad there's the Internet Archive, and I hope there's others, but at the same time I'm aware that an operation like that is really expensive and not profitable. Edit: I just got a 'thank you' mail from the IA for donating; apparently it only has 4000 sponsors. If you consider the IA an essential part of the internet, consider pushing a few dollars a month their way. If you work for an internet company, consider a corporate sponsorship. Let that dank investor money flow to something that isn't focused on optimizing engagement and ad impressions. For other archiving, I know of some people who have accumulated vast caches of data and information, for example about Playstation games. Amateur archivists. I know one guy who's been obsessed with an old PS2 game for years now, he doesn't even like the game and the game is objectively bad, but he's spent a ton of time on getting all the data out of there; unused content, the content no longer accessible that used to be an online mode, and getting all the rules and things out. To the point where he taught himself coding and wrote a save file editor, I mean the code looks crude, crammed into a single file and very literal, but it works, it can be followed, and it fulfils a purpose. Tl;dr don't underestimate individuals with singular, near obsessive interests on the internets. I'm sure some of you will feel seen.
- solstice 6y agoThat should be the last resort. Companies deliberately chucking their own history down the drain is a problem. Another example is wizards of the coast infuriating treatment of their web properties for Magic the Gathering. (Link rot, content reshuffles hiding older content etc)

- kuu 6y agoThe forced obsolescence of consoles is amazing. Now the new generation is advertising as one of their major achievements the retro-compatibility with the previous generation games, but what about PS3 or 360 games? Don't worry, you will have the option to pay again for the same game, maybe with new textures (but maybe not). At the same time, on PC I can play almost any game it has existed in PC history.
- mnd999 6y agoThe PS3 has an incredibly powerful CPU that is a a real pain to emulate. Modernretrogamer did quite an interesting Youtube piece on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLebZyha74o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLebZyha74o
- NullPrefix 6y agoThey don't make them like this anymore
- rusk 6y agoEvery Game Dev: Thank God
- mnd999 6y agoI know it was a pain to code for initially but once the tooling got better was it really that bad? The Cell still seems like an awesome piece of kit. Had the PS4 been a PS3 with a new GPU and a clocked up Cell with an extra PPE would that have been a bad thing?
- rusk 6y agoI “loved” the idea of the cell when I heard about it, but the development community’s struggle with it should be a salutary lesson to us all!

- lanevorockz 6y agoOn the age of Cancel Culture, History is Offensive.
- thomasedwards 6y agoErm, I think it’s the exact opposite? People want you to learn about history so we don’t make the same mistakes
- verroq 6y agoI think what he meant was that people will dig thru your history to find stuff that (they find) is no longer socially acceptable and cancel you.
- oblio 6y agoDoes "cancelling" even work against corporations? I'm finding it hard to think of any corporation that went away because they stopped being cool. Plenty of corporations went under because they no longer had a product-market fit, that's for sure :-)
- unishark 6y agoI think modern "censorship" is about how the self-described victim feels about the information, not its inherit value or the intention of the person sharing it. There was a story a couple years ago about students complaining some history topic made them feel upset (slavery maybe?) and demanding something be done about that.
- bsaul 6y agoi keep thinking that the job of national public libraries nowaday should include archiving the web. We shouldn't rely on foundations or the goodwill of private companies to save the material future historians will work on.
- mewse 6y agoThe history hasn’t really been removed; it’s just not being indexed from the main search box. And yeah, there’s an argument to be made that if there are no links to a thing that’s basically the same as that thing not existing and I do buy into that argument. But in this case, it seems to me like it’s as likely to be a mistake as anything else, seeing as the old pages themselves are still there and haven’t been removed, and the search functionality has only been missing them for less than a day (according to the linked article) To me, it seems more likely that some overenthusiastic webdev re-implemented the site’s search functionality and accidentally missed indexing a bunch of older documents in the CMS. I’d be inclined to report the issue to Sony and then maybe give it another couple days for the mistake to be noticed and fixed, before really sounding the alarm. For reference, here’s the “Ape Escape” page for the original PlayStation game, referenced in the article’s header image: https://www.playstation.com/en-us/games/ape-escape-psone/ https://www.playstation.com/en-us/games/ape-escape-psone/ And here’s the PS3 remaster of the game: https://www.playstation.com/en-nz/games/ape-escape-ps3/ https://www.playstation.com/en-nz/games/ape-escape-ps3/
- mothsonasloth 6y agoIt's alarmism/sensationalism/outrage journalism 101 See a recent issue, jump to conclusions, publish article, then request comment from the person/organisation who caused the outrage Profit $$$
- reaperducer 6y agooutrage journalism 101 I think you're being too generous here. It's not even journalism. This is a web site set up just for this, it's not a journalistic publication. It's one guy making money off of other people's outrage. I'd call it blogspam, but this guy doesn't even have a blog.
- bdowling 6y ago> It's not even journalism. Journalism is any public communication about the happenings of the world. This article is public and is about something that happened in the world, so it is journalism.
- keyle 6y agoSony has control over their own domain? Shocking.
- mulmen 6y agoThis is underrated. After a 23 day outage I will never, ever, under any circumstances choose a Sony product. They're irredeemable. It astonishes me they were able to continue selling consoles. In the same way that I will never forgive Microsoft for their hostility I will also never forgive Sony for their utter incompetence.
- robertlagrant 6y ago> They're irredeemable Or a few months later they'll have better staff and practices and it'll never happen again.
- mulmen 6y agoSure. If you ignore the very topic of this thread.
- OskarS 6y agoDude, it was 9 years and two console generations ago. They had a serious security breach and it was pretty bad, for sure, and the service stayed down for a while. But Sony is not the first company to have a security breach. And under the circumstances, they did the right thing: shutting the service down entirely until it could be fixed was clearly the right call, but it was also clearly a very difficult call to make. This is what we want companies to do when things like this happen. After the incident, they gave every user two AAA games (very good ones too! InFamous and LittleBigPlanet!), and compensation for the downtime (as well as 30 days of PSN free for non-members, even though they weren't really affected), which was pretty darn generous. And there has been no verified reports of fraud resulting from the breach. I was also annoyed I couldn't play Call of Duty for 3 weeks, but I got over it.

- xhruso00 6y agoFor those who cannot access the website https://archive.is/CypsB https://archive.is/CypsB
- billpg 6y agoYou've got enough capacity to send me a "Resource limit reached" error page, including a couple of fancy images, but not the page itself?
- codetrotter 6y agoIt’s the hosting provider they use that want to charge more money for more traffic. It’s lame but not unreasonable. Personally I would not host my sites with that hosting provider.
- nottorp 6y agoThe info can been found elsewhere, but I don't recommend trusting Sony even to keep available the games you paid for digitally either. Yes, that means no discless PS5, and getting your games (at least those you want to keep) on disc.
- shadeslayer_ 6y agoHN Kiss of Death. 508 Resource Limit Reached.
- KlimYadrintsev 6y agoOld games never really benefit the corps, it is the hot new games that get all the attention.
- app4soft 6y agoAs for hot new 'old games' I may recommend enjoy free multi-platform games by Retroguru devs[0,1], especially their "Hermes"[2] game. - Uhrheber 6y agoPlease turn JavaScript on and reload the page. DDoS protection by Cloudflare They probably know what I think they can do to themselves.
- easton 6y agoPlease don't complain about webpage infrastructure in the comments, it degrades the conversation as everyone has an opinion about Cloudflare and that becomes the topic instead of PlayStation games. https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html
- itsthecourier 6y agoWhen the Tokyo Olimpics came, Sony demolished their building to make it a park and rebuild the whole thing. I looked for that building for half an hour in 2018 and got sad everytime I see my old photos there
- acomjean 6y agoI imagine this is an error. The ps5 has a platformer game (very cute) called Astrobot[1] where the goal seems to be to collect Sony “artifacts” of PlayStation consoles from days gone by. These artifacts are 3D renders of all the old hardware. [1]https://www.playstation.com/en-us/games/astros-playroom/ https://www.playstation.com/en-us/games/astros-playroom/ Also this generation 4->5 seems to be backward compatible
- HeckFeck 6y agoThankfully, there's always MobyGames (http://www.mobygames.com http://www.mobygames.com) - the IMDB of computer games. You can always rely on the enthusiasts when the company fails.
- selykg 6y agoI think it's simpler than this. They're shutting down the online store for PS3 systems. https://www.essentiallysports.com/sad-news-for-playstation-3-and-vita-owners-as-sony-get-ready-to-update-webstore-news-esports/ https://www.essentiallysports.com/sad-news-for-playstation-3... You can still access the PS3 store from the PS3, but not from the web.
- nazgulsenpai 6y agoI guess the website was hugged to death. "508 Resource Limit Reached" after a double captcha Cloudflare gate.
- CoUHKT57BSe 6y agoThis post (or rather the original delistedgames article) is so unneccessary (although I guess most of the chat here is about backwards compatibility then the posted topic) because this is no surprise incident. Sony actually announced this was going to happen a few months ago and it was covered in a few prominent online gaming sites. The only thing Sony did was streamline their online store (no delisting going on) to focus on current and previous gen stuff. All the older stuff is still available on their respective console stores. So if you want to buy or browse PS3 games, you have to boot up your old PS3 and open the store, no big deal really to have to use the machine they play on to buy them. Very few websites will keep all the content live continuously just for the sake of it, they nearly all revamp and update occasionally, especially with new product/technology launches.
- navait 6y agoI bought last night LittleBigPlanet 2 on my PS3. No problems. No idea what y'all are talking about.
- musicale 6y agoPresumably someone at Sony decided they wanted to emphasize the PS5 and that keeping the lights on was too expensive, but shutting down PS3/PSVita/PSP games and PS Classics on the PSN Store is still disappointing.
