Important Open Source projects should not use GitHub
- musicale 6y ago> It is no news that Microsoft purchased GitHub in 2018, everyone knows that. Yet despite that fact thousands of the worlds most important Open Source projects continue to host their code on GitHub. People seem to have forgotten just how rotten Microsoft really is and how dangerous that situation is. Developers probably know if github goes bad, they can relatively easily migrate their code off of github (much as many projects migrated away from sourceforge), and every developer already has a copy of the whole git repo. Issues, pull requests, wiki, and actions are a bit harder to migrate but not really dealbreakers. What evidence is there that Microsoft github is significantly worse (and/or less trustworthy) than pre-Microsoft github?
- BuildTheRobots 6y agoI'm curious why gitlab isn't on the list of self-host alternatives.

- Proven 6y agoBullshit. Is the author long Filecoin or something? It's easy to migrate code if need be. What's more likely - ad-infested SourceForge goes bust, Gitlab gets acquired by Google or Github goes bad? I'm very happy that MS owns GH, it's been getting better since MS acquired them and MS has enough resources to keep improving it.
- 2Gkashmiri 6y agoyeah youtube-dl was nuked with dmca. i am not sure if that would have happened had they been on a selfhosted gitlab. right?
- LIV2 6y agoThey'll send the DMCA to your hosting provider
- 2Gkashmiri 6y agoand if i self host at home like many people do these days? to the ISP?
- trillic 6y agoyup
- type0 6y agoThen reinstating the repo with different hosting provider outside the US would be a viable alternative
- boltefnovor 6y agoNo real reasons given. Just an old-school anti Microsoft rant. Hohum.
