Harvard/Stanford/MIT Researchers Find Secret to Success, and It's Not Talent

- ctlachance 6y agoTLDR: Opportunity is the most important factor in determining success.
- babesh 6y agoThe title is disingenuous. The article is based on http://www.equality-of-opportunity.org/assets/documents/inventors_summary.pdf http://www.equality-of-opportunity.org/assets/documents/inve... which states that “Children at the top of their 3rd grade math class are much more likely to become inventors, but only if they come from high-income families (Figure 2)”. The chart does show high performing kids producing more inventions irrespective of class but with the rich kids producing at approximately double the rate. There seems to be a clear pattern of increasing invention with increasing scores for poor kids but not so for rich kids till you get to the top performing kids. The secret to success appears to be a combination of talent and opportunity in approximately equal measures. The article also points out that opportunities are not equal. Sounds like the classical nature or nurture question with the answer being both. You aren’t getting very far without talent.

None of those are "good" or "bad": it's just the beliefs about what "normal" is. It's all about the environment the child is raised in.
