Haiku: Contest for System Sounds
- whywhywhywhy 6y agoI love the idea of Haiku but don’t do a contest. Just find a sound designer you believe in and raise the money to hire them. No spec work!!! As a developer would you ever enter a contest to do unpaid work to pitch your code? No of course not so why ask people from other careers to do so?
- agildehaus 6y agoHaiku's logo was a contest or a vote at one point, as was the name Haiku. Sort of a tradition :)
- whywhywhywhy 6y agoWas Haiku's file system decided by a contest? Was Haiku's terminal client decided by a contest? Was Haiku's window manager decided by a contest? of course not, why is it ok for UX, audio and design elements to be?
- agildehaus 6y agoIt's not like the maintainers won't have the final say. It's a way to get a bunch of people interested in contributing, which is the primary hurdle.
- cnasc 6y agoIs the problem “unpaid” or is the problem “contest?” Because the goalposts seem to have moved a bit from your first post.

- takeda 6y agoEh, what a let down, was expecting you to write this in a form of haiku.
- thesuitonym 6y agoHaiku is made by people who love Haiku, for people who love Haiku. Those who aren't interested in the project need not apply.
- whywhywhywhy 6y agodon't do a contest at all then if the methodology is "If you build it, they will come" just wait for them to come.
- dylan604 6y agowhy not let them have their fun? if you don't want to enter the contest then don't. it's not your concern if other people are happy to participate.
- Gualdrapo 6y agoIt's funny that while you're saying this, one of the comments says they should tell Linux & BSD people.
- nix23 6y agoWhy do you think BSD's or Linux need System-sounds?
- cxr 6y ago> As a developer would you ever enter a contest to do unpaid work to pitch your code? No of course not Huh? This happens thousands of times a day, and that's been the trajectory of the last 30+ years of software development. Every patch submitter is "pitching" their work as the solution to a given bug. They're just generally not highly publicized, precisely because of how common it is.
- mmastrac 6y agoThis is an open-source project. Everything that goes into it is free work. Why should sounds be any different?
- guerrilla 6y agoFor reference, some of the old BeOS sounds [1]. 1. https://youtu.be/f-uCC_bM8zs https://youtu.be/f-uCC_bM8zs
- rcarmo 6y agoHadn’t checked Haiku for a few months. Just noticed that one of the last blog entries says “kallisti5 continued working on making Haiku working under arm architecture. Currently Haiku is crashing early in the boot process, and it is being investigated.” I’ve been banging the drum for Raspberry Pi support for a good while, hope this is a step forward.
