- gman83 6y agoDom Hofmann, one of the cofounders of Vine launched Byte which is basically a new Vine: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byte_(app) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byte_(app). I don't know if it's catching on though. I guess if TikTok does get banned we'll see a mass migration somewhere.
- iamcreasy 6y agoI don't keep up with the new social media - but I am wondering why TikTok succeeded where Vine failed?
- canada2020 6y agoBetter recommendation engine
- amelius 6y agoOr actual people doing the recommendation?
- umeshunni 6y agoI also think 30 seconds is just long enough to tell a meaningful story rather than Vine's 6 seconds which was only useful for short-form comedy.
- adjkant 6y agoAnd note it's 60 seconds, so even more so
- timemct 6y agoVine launched in 2012. There probably wasn't a critical mass of mobile phone owners, specifically teens, at that time. The iPhone hit the market only five years earlier.
- Bayart 6y agoI haven't tried it but everybody says TikTok's magic ingredient is the AI behind recommendations.
- notatoad 6y agoThe music licenses are a big deal - you can put actual popular music in your tiktoks and not have to worry about it being taken down.
- ksec 6y agoIs the 30 Second rule applicable World Wide? Just wondering.
- someelephant 6y agoIt's difficult to understand why Microsoft wouldn't buy this. With some clever marketing I'm sure they could grow the username rapidly and it would cost less than 1% of whatever TikTok would cost.
- ffk 6y agoThey tried, but apparently the sale was blocked due to AI export control laws in China.
- changoplatanero 6y agoi think he means why didn't they buy the rights to the name "vine"
- jonas21 6y agoWhy? The hard part isn't building a Vine or TikTok clone. It's getting 800M people to come and use it.
- cercatrova 6y agoReally depends. They made and then shut down Mixer, their Twitch competitor, because no one was using it.
- DLay 6y agoBytedance paid $1 billion in advertisements in 2018. Anyone remember how annoying and ubiquitous their ads were? That was on top of purchasing Musically for $800m, partially for their existing U.S. user base.
- m-p-3 6y agoThere's also Google launching YouTube Shorts, but who knows when they'll send it to Google Graveyard.
- londons_explore 6y agoGoogle Graveyard is in maintainance mode, and is not accepting new burials I'm afraid.
- axaxs 6y agoThey could not have picked a worse name. No kid is gonna say 'find me on shorts.'
- dzhiurgis 6y agoMaybe some kid with 10 years of C++, kubernetes and tensorflow experience will
- est 6y ago> I guess if TikTok does get banned we'll see a mass migration somewhere. Mass migration to Canada Tiktok.
- ryanSrich 6y agoInstagram already launched a better TikTok and it's growing rapidly.
- someelephant 6y agoThat's great but vine had and still has a great brand. Hopefully there is somebody competent at Elliott pushing for this golden egg to be hatched.
- ryanSrich 6y ago> That's great but vine had and still has a great brand Gen Z doesn't even know what vine is. That's the majority of tiktok users. Reels and TikTok already have the brand. Relaunching vine would be dumb. Only millennials would care and it would just be the millennials that used it before, not new users.
- DLay 6y agoWhy do you think Reels is superior to TikTok?
- anoffvu 6y agoIf anything Reels is 80% watered down and merely a shorter Instagram videos or igtv. Nothing about the reels experience compares to be honest...
- noetokyo 6y agoAnd instagram is known for it's fake userbase. The majority of accounts are probably just bots.
