Wow. New Zealand is one of our most stalwart allies. Why would we do this?
- sg47 6y agoPeople have been pointing to New Zealand's handling of the crisis as an example of strong leadership.

- sonotathrowaway 6y agoOne of the trump administration’s goals is to isolate America and weaken its stature among its allies. Whether or not this particular action is a result of that is unclear.
- Udik 6y ago> One of the trump administration’s goals is to isolate America and weaken its stature among its allies Why?
- InitialLastName 6y agoBecause Trump's base thinks that trade with those allies is the reason they can't get a manufacturing/extraction job that will support their desired lifestyle.
- Udik 6y agoThis is not the equivalent of weakening the US's stature among allies. And even if that were the only possible outcome of that policy, it still wouldn't be the administration's goal, only an unintended side effect.
- sonotathrowaway 6y agoBecause he views the world transactionally and as a zero sum game, “America first” has to come at the expense of other nations. It doesn’t hurt that his benefactor feels threatened by NATO and was expelled from the G7
- dqpb 6y agoTrump has been attacking US states, US federal agencies, US allies, and many subsets of American citizens since he took office. By most accounts he is not working in the interest of the US. Who is he working for? That's an open question.
- Darmody 6y agoHe IS working for the US. But having a different agenda than you doesn't make him a Putin puppet.

- dqpb 6y agoIt's impossible for me to know who he thinks he's working for. But I can clearly see, from his words and his actions, who he might-as-well-be working for.
- Darmody 6y agoBut that's a simplistic way to look at it. At least I think so. I do stuff that could make you think I "work" for Biden and I do stuff that could make you think I "work" for Trump. Also, why do you speak in code? If you think he's working for Putin you can say it. It doesn't matter. It won't get you arrested.
- vgrafe 6y agoHe is working for himself only. Too self-centered to put anyone/anything else above his interests, which makes him oblivious and predictable, with a massive amount of people profiting off that fact.
- lopmotr 6y agoThis Russia-Trump conspiracy theory is one of the left's intellectual failures. You might as well believe Obama is a Muslim spy or the Illuminati controls the world or whatever. You've just been worked up into a frenzy by the media and don't realize it.
- advisedwang 6y agoLook to individual people's motives, not the US' interests. US Sec of State Pompeo knows Trump, who fires cabinet members that don't tow the line and act loyally to him, wants the US to appear no worse impacted by COVID than other countries to prevent general election weakness. Pompeo therefore does whatever he can to generate news articles about how much worse other countries are.

- xupybd 6y agoIt's just a warning that NZ is not covid free. We are not yet. Yes it's under control but we are not out of the woods yet. I don't think this will impact diplomatic relations.
- plandis 6y agoThese types of warnings are pretty routine from the state department aren’t they? The warning level for NZ (“exercise caution”) is lower than most of Europe where the guidance is (“reconsider travel”) It seems reasonable for the US to warn it’s citizens of all countries where a highly transmissive virus exists.
