I'm a bit surprised at the use of the term "Apple silicon". Everybody seems to have started to use it. As best as I can tell, this is a term invented by Apple's marketing department. I believe it's meant to imply that Apple is producing some magic that goes beyond the CPU.
Readers of this site will of course understand exactly what is being discussed, but I'm concerned that the overuse of this marketing term confuses things for non-technical readers. There are already more common, and more accurate terms that can be used instead.
- imtringued 6y agoYou're not going to run android or regular linux on your iPhone so why bother advertising it as ARM?
- tim-- 6y agoFor CPUID, it makes sense. GenuineIntel AuthenticAMD AppleSilicon
- lokedhs 6y agoThe downvotes sure came quickly on my original post. My point was that we don't refer to AMD CPU's as "Authentic AMD" in general speech. However, in Apple's case they have succeeded in promoting their own narrative. I understand that this happens, but I was just intrigued by the fact that they managed to do it. The difference in terms does have a subtle effect in conversation however.
