Ah, so they did it all over NYC subway a few years ago. To a point where I had to do a double take before I realized it was just an Amazon promo.
There are quite a few Eastern Europeans and Jews in NYC. Why was that OK?
- tedunangst 6y agoAre there pictures of these subway swastikas? (no, of course not.)
- notyourday 6y agoYeah, it was even in Gothamist. So I'm sure it is also in NYPost and Daily News.

- notyourday 6y agoThere was at least one set of ads of Smith standing with in a profile with swastika on his sleeve visible.
- rsynnott 6y agoAh, yeah, that's not at all as bad as I was thinking. Though still a bit... off, to be honest.

- NovemberWhiskey 6y agoSince precision is important: no, there were not swastikas. There was a symbol of an eagle (the Reichsadler) over an 'iron cross' symbol as part of the advertising. You can find that fairly easily by looking at an image search on your favorite search engine. n.b. the iron cross symbol is still used in Germany for e.g. the roundel of the German Air Force. I don't doubt that the design would fall afoul of the MS content guidelines as I'm sure perching the Reichsadler on top of the iron cross would be the kind of thing they mean by "contextual clues".
- rsynnott 6y agoWasn’t aware of that. I’d argue that that wasn’t okay, personally, and that the city shouldn’t have permitted it.
- notyourday 6y agoMTA said its policies were not violated as it was not political advertisement.
