But there is no federal government in the EU.
Can't the tourist states (PIGS) open their borders to US travellers?
- Scoundreller 6y agoCould, but with Schengen, they’d upset all of their neighbours if people use PIGS as a backdoor. Dunno if they’d go that far. Spain was even asking French visitors to quarantine until recently. Greece might be tempted though: easy to control any Americans entering other EU territories, there is no border free by land from Greece. At least in France, they do extra checks on incoming flights from Greece as it is for refugees.
- Svip 6y agoThe only country during the negotiation that was advocating for travel from the US was Poland. Greece has seen very few cases relatively speaking, and they want it to remain that way. There are plenty of tourists from other European countries that can visit Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain. Besides, those same European tourists won't be travelling beyond Europe this summer anyway.
- dmurray 6y agoYes. It's a "recommendation" from the Council of the EU and is not legally binding in itself [0]. In practice, the member states are likely to go along with it, or they would have made a fuss when it was being discussed.
