These skirmishes (Zoom now, TikTok earlier and the ongoing Huawei one) make for interesting shows, for those outside China and the US. China uses nationalism as the excuse for censorship. As long as you don't criticize China you are free to do anything you want. The US uses morality as the excuse for censorship. As long as you don't do anything that violates that particular notion of morality (the American way of life?), you are free to do anything you want. Wonder which will be easier for the 80% of people outside these 2 countries.
- chii 6y agoThe american way of life is easier. Because it's demonstrably better so far.
- hrktb 6y agoFeels like the current events aren’t really going in that direction. And it’s sad because we’d really need to have decent govs and leadership where the power concentrated.
- grishka 6y ago> Wonder which will be easier for the 80% of people outside these 2 countries. I'm Russian. Neither. We have our own Facebook that doesn't moderate as much and explicitly allows adult content as long as it's marked such.
- totalZero 6y agoWould you please give me an example of something that the US government is currently censoring based on morality?
- idrios 6y agoI think he's talking about the conversation going on about FB, Youtube, Twitter removing posts that are hate speech, inciting violence, spreading misinformation, etc.
- heavyset_go 6y agoI'd love to know the OP's location where free speech protections are stronger than those of the US, so much so that it is entertaining to watch moderators enforce the rules of their internet forums from afar.
- jumelles 6y agoNone of that is government censorship.
- idrios 6y agonor did the parent comment say it was the US govt doing the censorship
- z9e 6y agoEh, but in the US we now have people being banned or censored for political dissent. We’re not heading in a good direction either.
- humanrebar 6y agoThe U.S. has high standards for itself. Chinese policies are openly racist, speech is literally criminal, reproductive rights do not exist, government openly censors its citizens, and the list goes on.
- z9e 6y agoAbsolutely, I was not implying that the US was worse than China.
