I couldn't agree more that AMP is terrible. I do everything I can to avoid it. Using DuckDuckGo certainly helps, but I will still occasionally stumble on an AMP site. I've created a hosts block list to help me avoid AMP as much as possible. It currently has 3,569 unique domains (works great with a PiHole!). I'm really concerned about Chrome's 'signed exchanges' where they can fake the URL completely. I hope Firefox will never support it.

- diminish 6y agoWe don't need any other website except Google /fear Google scraped and stole all the traffic for covid19 since 3 months just like it did for other topics
- elliekelly 6y agoJust wanted to say thanks for maintaining your block lists! I use a few with NextDNS. I try to be privacy conscious but I don’t really have the technical background to know the best way to make that happen so I very much appreciate that you share your work and make it easy for those of us who aren’t experts. I’ve never been quite sure that I’ve configured things right but your NOT BLOCKING image doesn’t show up for me so that’s quite a relief!
- lightswitch05 6y agoI'm glad you like it! If you have any issues with it, I encourage people to come open a ticket explaining what is wrong. Sometimes I screw up and block things that shouldn't be - other times I have reasons why I blocked something and the ticket provides a good place to have a that discussion. Feedback from the community is great help to me in improving the lists.
- JoshTriplett 6y ago> I'm really concerned about Chrome's 'signed exchanges' where they can fake the URL completely. They're not faking the URL; a signed exchange contains data that can only have come from the original site. It's a secure way of handling caching/CDNs/etc, and it'll be a net improvement for security that allows sites to put less trust in third-party servers and scripts.
- throwaway2048 6y agoIts deeply misleading to pretend stuff like signed exchanges and portals are purely about content distribution and security, and not control over said content being shifted to Google, and away from authors and other sites. Its a similar vein to how many of the objections to AMP were being white-washed with "its open source, if you have a problem with it why aren't you submitting a pull request??"
- joshuamorton 6y agoI'll bite: how does signed exchanges provide control to Google?
- throwaway2048 6y agoBecause its cover to allow them to subsume content and serve it solely from google.com, and deny the originating page any traffic or recognition, or swap it out transparently when they feel like it. This is literally already happening with the info sidebar, the reason signed exchanges matter is so they can throw up the smokescreen about how its cryptographically verified to come from the original page, so why are people upset. Any site that objects and refuses to implement this stuff will just disappear from the first page which is reserved only for Accelerated By Google sites. (Which is already happening for AMP links on mobile searches).
- Kalium 6y agoAs I understood signed exchanges, a correct implementation makes it impossible for the intermediary to inject, alter, replace, or otherwise swap out any part of the page without failing verification. This would mean the original server gets to do all the branding and get all the recognition and integrity in transit that its controllers might wish. I've clearly missed something. Can you help me?
- throwaway2048 6y agoAMP already heavily restricts what the original page is allowed to put inside, including things like ads, javascript and branding. You can be certain anything google implements around this proposal will have similar very tight restrictions.
- hjek 6y agoEven better than blocking AMP is just redirecting to the proper page[0]. [0]: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/amp2html/ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/amp2html/
- throwaway1777 6y agoDoes that extension break with this most recent change though?
- memo_ree 6y agoThis most recent change is just a bug in Image Search, at least based on the tweets I read. The extension seems to inspect the AMP article's URL and HTML, both of which are outside the scope of Image Search: https://github.com/da2x/amp2html https://github.com/da2x/amp2html
- texasbigdata 6y agoYessss. Any chrome equivalent
- marakv2 6y agoAside from installing Firefox (best option), there is this: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/redirect-amp-to-html/kifkmmpiicbcnkjaliilaoeaojlldonl?hl=en https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/redirect-amp-to-ht...
- d2wa 6y agoIt’s also available for Edge. https://microsoftedge.microsoft.com/addons/detail/abjhjmfkmdfggjomfpojjfcehhkambcc https://microsoftedge.microsoft.com/addons/detail/abjhjmfkmd...
- lightswitch05 6y agoYes, that is even better! Unfortunately it doesn’t work on iOS, or I would have never created my list. Literally the only thing I miss about Android was being able to use browser extensions like uBlock Origin with Firefox on Android. Safari has its built-in content filters but it’s not the same.
- flattone 6y agoDuck duck go is a lighthouse in the storm. We are all saved. If Jesus came back ask yourself this, ‘would he be google or duck duck go’ Exactly. Search your hearts and use the net with your values as though they’ve become a force to be feared by the swill that is invading our liberties (google).
- madeofpalk 6y agoIf you're using DuckDuckGo, presumably a site that doesnt do the "AMP Cache" iFraming that Google Search does, then what are you left with, apart from a website that will almost definitely load faster than the 'original'?
- Andrew_Quentin 6y agoAh, so that's why Google has added site speed to their ranking factors? Another brick to hit them with then in the anti-trust lawsuits.
