Interesting. Maybe it's because we can stand to be materialist about self, but less so about others? To be reductive about self is maybe humbling, but to be reductive of others would be unconducive to operating in the world with those others in "good faith" (whatever that is). Just trying that thought on -- not sure i'll keep it, but thanks for provoking it :)
