How hard are you looking?
Facebook, Dropbox, Uber, Apple and literally thousands of other companies, big and small, use Go.
- threatofrain 7y agoWhat people want to know is the trajectory of current relationship that a company has with a technology, otherwise I'll tell you that Facebook is a Haskell company and Amazon is a TLA+ company.
- lostmsu 7y agoUse - maybe. Is it the most used lang in these companies? Probably not.
- nemothekid 7y agoFor Dropbox and Uber, it is.
- takeda 7y agoI thought Uber was node.js company (to the point that they had to rewrite existing solid projects, because they weren't in node.js) As for Dropbox I was convinced primary language was Python.
- bhupy 7y agoUber has primarily been a Go shop for over 2 years now.
- nemothekid 7y agoDropBox: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11284051 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11284051 Their switch from Python to Go was pretty well documented on their engineering blog, but I can't find it, other than comments on HN like the one above.
- pjmlp 7y agoThey are also using Rust nowadays. Just like they use JavaScript, Swift, Java and Kotlin for mobile development.
- timbit42 7y agoSure, but beyond those thousands, there are millions of other companies that aren't.
- apta 7y agoAnd those companies generally use C++, Java, etc. in a much larger capacity.
- tapirl 7y agoThis not true for new companies, for example, Dropbox and Uber.
- apta 7y agoThose are more the exception than the norm, and their decisions to do so come at significant costs.
- tapirl 7y agoAt least from what I know, Go is an important factor making Dropbox/Uber/Cloudflare succeed. Go is absolutely not an exception in successful startups.
- apta 6y agoI know people in at least one of the companies you mentioned, and things look very different on the inside. They succeeded despite of the language, not because of it.
- tapirl 6y agoSurely, "it is not because of", every language is ok. But experienced programmers will choose the most suitable (most efficient, either in runtime performance and development speed/quality) one they think.
