How about, ask for an integer between 1 and 2. Can't think of one? Guess they're the same number then.

- brlewis 6y agoApples and oranges. For any two different real numbers, there's a number between them. Integers work differently.
- andrewprock 6y agoThis is a bold assertion, and one that is not obviously true, especially in cases like 0.999... and 1.0
- Pudini 6y agoObviously saying it is not obviously true is false if 0.999... == 1.0
- perl4ever 6y agoCan something be true and not obvious?
- Pudini 6y agoObviously not. Which is the point in using the word obvious, obviously. Namely, using it to feel superior or to not provide a better argument.
- perl4ever 6y agoWhen I use the word, the point is to call out the fact that I think it's obvious, so if others don't, they can explain why. Not to forestall any discussion. Anyone who uses the word differently is doing it wrong.
- empath75 6y agoThose aren’t different real numbers. That’s the whole point of the conversation.
