So improved CPU which most people do not car about, old design and not great camera.
- gherkinnn 7y agoPeople don’t care about the CPU, they care about the fact that the phone will remain fast and snappy for many years to come. And many of the same people who don’t give a shit about the CPU don’t care about the design and not-great camera either.
- fulafel 7y agoThe reason phones become badly janky as the years pass is very rately the CPU. You can tell by how the lag ebbs, there are small hangs and the the device gets going again. It's some combination of flash perf degeneration, ram squeeze, and the many ways the OS install degenerates between wipes. And OS upgrades that have left old hw performance regressions unfixed.
- sq_ 7y agoMost compelling thing versus similarly priced Android offerings from my point of view is the guarantee of software support far into the future. Hardware is roughly the same as the 11, so, based on Apple's past behavior, one can expect that this will be supported for roughly as long as the 11 will. I'm definitely not aware of many Android phones at this price point that one can expect to get security updates, much less feature updates, 4-5 years into the future.
- GeekyBear 7y agoThe iPhone 5s got six years of OS and security updates. Since the iPhone 4s, every major iPhone has received at least five years of support. The sole exception was the first attempt at a budget iPhone, the 2013 iPhone 5c, which only got four years of updates.
- scarface74 7y agoThe 4s from 2011 got a bug fix/security update June of last year....
- saagarjha 7y agoThat was for GPS positioning; there were no security fixes in that update.
- hocuspocus 7y agoOn Android, a much bigger part of the OS gets updated through the Play store and Play services, you certainly do get access to new features 5 years into the future.
- ViViDboarder 7y agoBut you’re on your own if there is a kernel exploit!
- simonh 7y agoThat’s true, Play Services has proved a great way to get useful feature updates out without being beholden to the carriers and manufacturers, but it doesn’t really help much on the security side.
- hocuspocus 7y agoIt's not perfect and Google should definitely figure out a way to push low-level security fixes, but it does help on the security side as well. A lot of the attack surface (the Play store itself, messaging apps, browser, system webview, ...) keeps getting updates for many years after the end of system upgrades delivered by the OEM.
- fomine3 7y agoMostly agree but Apple often cuts support by RAM capacity. iPhone 11 has 4GB but SE has 3GB. I expect 11 gets a bit longer support.
- tambourine_man 7y ago>…and not great camera The camera is best in class. It's a single less system, but a remarkable one.
- lotsofpulp 7y agoThe amount of people who make use of the camera features in the 11 pro versus the camera in the SE is probably in the low single digits, if that.
- 1123581321 7y agoGiven that 11 Pro features are accessed as soon as you touch the prominent zoom UI, and that Night Mode is automatic, that seems unlikely, but I would like to learn more. It doesn’t seem like public data is readily available after some searching.
- lotsofpulp 7y agoI don’t have data of course, but the way most people take photos, it really doesn’t seem like they know or care how to utilize those functions. The zoom is nice, but is it $500 nice? In my circle, they’re taking the pics, and then sharing super compressed versions of it in WhatsApp. No one is spending their time organizing huge photo and video files for posterity. Maybe I am wrong and people will opt for better camera functions. I certainly like that they’re hitting multiple price points now, so if you want a fancy camera you can get it and if you don’t, you can get SE.
- unethical_ban 7y agoThe camera is outright fantastic in terms of performance, responsiveness, etc. and people do care about the CPU - they care about their phone being responsive, and being usable for more than 24 months before it starts feeling like an Amiga. The A13 is an incredible processor.
- code_duck 7y agoWhat do you mean by 'feeling like an Amiga'? I don't think that is a great example of an unresponsive interface.
