Ask HN: Paying for dependencies
The world of modern software (at least webdev) is dominated with open-source projects that struggle to generate any money. Unless a company decides to donate to the projects they use, all of the monetary value is captured by the company and not people who created most of the software in the first place.
What if those projects were to offer commercial licenses instead? I’m thinking about projects the size of jsdom, html2canvas that take a ton of effort to iron out and are very useful - but the incentive for the maintainers to keep fixing the bugs for no gain is very low.
Not every piece of non-free code must be wrapped in a bulky SaaS to be worth paying for.
What do you think?
