Nvidia calling gaming PC owners to put their systems to work fighting Covid-19
- SCdF 7y agoYou can of course just run folding@home on your CPU as well, no nvidia requirement... required.
- KarlKemp 7y agoIt’s been a while since I worked in protein folding and tried folding@home, but IIRC the difference between GPUs and CPUs was at about the scale we see in machine learning, something like 20x to 200x. That makes the usefulness of CPUs for this purpose questionable—you might be contributing more to that other disaster facing humanity than alleviating the current one.
- slizard 7y ago[Disclaimer: How do I know this stuff? I'm a core developer of GROMACS, one of the major molecular dynamics simulation FOSS community codes. Molecular dynamic is the algorithm/method behind the F@H simulations. I work as a researcher in high performance computing and have (co-)developed many of the parallel algorithms and GPU acceleration in GROMACS.] 20-200x is simply not true. Typically, such numbers are a result of comparing unoptimized CPU code to moderately or well-optimized GPU code which is often misleading. (Such differences are however perfectly reasonable when comparing hardware-accelerated workloads like ML/DL). If you compare actually well-optimized codes, you'll see more like ~4-5x difference in performance for FLOP/instrction-bound code as it is the case for well-optimized molecular dynamics. Case in point, I recently pointed out the huge difference in CPU performance of two of the top molecular simulation codes, one of which is 8-10x faster on CPUs than the other, solving the same problem [2]. F@H relies on GROMACS as a CPU engine [1] which happens to be the same code as I quoted above as the fast one. The trouble is that F@H has not updated their CPU engine for many years and distribute CPU binaries which lack crucial SIMD optimizations to allow making use of AVX2/AVX512 on modern x86 CPUs as well as the years of algorithmic improvement and code optimization we made. These two factors combined lead to _significantly_ lower F@H CPU performance compared to what they had we're they using a recent GROMACS engine. Consequently, due to the combination of an inherent performance advantage of GPUs and the severely outdated CPU engine, it is indeed not worth wasting energy with running F@H on CPUs. [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Folding@home_cores#GROMACS https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Folding@home_cores#GRO... [2] https://twitter.com/twilard/status/1235142089156984832?s=20 https://twitter.com/twilard/status/1235142089156984832?s=20 Edit 1: adjusted wording to reflect that the performance difference between running outdated GROMACS version and subotimal SIMD optimizations on modern hw can have a range of performance difference, depending on hardware and inputs. Edit 2: fixed typo + formatting.
- swinglock 7y agoIt seems irresponsible to waste donated cycles like that. Does anyone else do it better?
- slizard 7y agoCan you please elaborate? Are you referring to the F@H CPU "cores" being outdated and inefficient?
- swinglock 7y agoYes, if it's so. When donating money or compute time, I want my donation to be used efficiently and not be wasted by high overheads.
- slizard 7y ago> When donating money or compute time, I want my donation to be used efficiently and not be wasted by high overheads. Fair point. I think this is something you should bring up with the authors of Folding@Home. I do not work on that project. My personal view on this is that there is always a cost/benefit balance that one has to strike which is often tricky especially given the considerably constrained resources as it is typically the case in academic computational/simulation tool development. It is however, as you point out, a great responsibility of the researchers and developers of codes to make sure that choices made and action taken (or not) do not lead to disproportionate waste of resources donated by volunteers or awarded through a grant by research funding agencies. I do not know the detailed reasons why F@H chose to not update CPU "core" since FahCore_a7 (AFAIK based one GROMACS code from 2014), but it is likely related to the aforementioned cost/benefit analysis done in their team. One of the motivations could have been (just hypothesizing) that the software engineering efforts estimated to be required to update FahCore for CPUs (which generate a very small fraction of the "points") would have taken away resources from the GPU FahCore.
- slizard 7y ago> Does anyone else do it better? To that question, assuming by "anyone" here you are asking about other donate-your-cycles-distributed-computing-projects: I am not too familiar with how well-optimized the codes of different @home projects are. Taking a few steps back, perhaps the efficiency of these codes is the lesser issue and to be honest, in some (many?) cases other forms of donation/contribution may further more scientific progress than simply crunching numbers on one's home PC.
- llukas 7y agohttps://foldingathome.org/faqs/high-performance/folding-graphics-cards/gpus-can-help-fah/ https://foldingathome.org/faqs/high-performance/folding-grap... GPUs are faster.
- micael_dias 7y agoFrom the reddit thread: "For people worried about electricity usage: My 3900x/2070s system, if using both cpu+gpu for folding full, uses 430w at the wall plug. Even at 21cents per kw/h this is about 9 cents/h. When setting up your machine, it's best to go to slots and remove your cpu. GPU tends to make all the points, especially if you have a newer GPU. I removed my 12 core 3900x from slots and barely noticed a drop in points while my system was running much cooler and with even less power usage. Leave it to default disease and you'll likely get covid-19 projects. I use both my 2070s cards and I get estimated 3.2M ppd for $2/24hrs of electricity. TLDR: PC's don't use much power. Get folding@home and just use your GPU(s) at full. Leave it to default to get covid-19 projects."
- sundvor 7y agoJust as with crypto mining, I'd recommend to set up a new Folding profile on your GPU settings. You want to be controlling GPU power limits eg reduce it by a bit and adding a more aggressive fan setting. I applied this strategy when bitcoin mining on my 1080ti which I got shortly after release. I was aiming for sub 60c temps. The results paid for the GPU, and I didn't fry it either - still my daily driver today. (The 1080TI is / was such a beast, with exceptional value for money.)
- m4rtink 7y agoFilding@home is not Nvidia obly (unlike other GPGPU projects, unfortunately). Works just fine on my AMD card.
- cbg0 7y agoAt this time they are not sending covid CPU projects to clients, only GPU ones.
- DelightOne 7y agoI only got a CPU project, but no GPU (GTX 1080). > No WUs available for this configuration
- SpikedCola 7y agoSame problem on my GTX 1050 (just tried updating drivers, no change). However, my laptop's GTX460M has pulled down project 11745 and is folding away. EDIT after fiddling with gpu-index, cuda-index, and opencl-index (had to manually set them to point to my GTX 1050 [also have a BARTS card that is unsupported]) I was able to get a WU to download :)
- nocture 7y agohow do you find the correct index values? My 2080 Ti receives no work.
- SpikedCola 7y agoIn my log window I see: GPUs: 2 GPU 0: Bus:1 Slot:0 Func:0 AMD:4 Barts XT [Radeon HD 6800 Series] GPU 1: Bus:2 Slot:0 Func:0 NVIDIA:7 GP107 [GeForce GTX 1050 LP] 1862 CUDA Device 0: Platform:0 Device:0 Bus:2 Slot:0 Compute:6.1 Driver:8.0 OpenCL Device 0: Platform:0 Device:0 Bus:2 Slot:0 Compute:1.2 Driver:378.49 OpenCL Device 1: Platform:1 Device:0 Bus:1 Slot:0 Compute:1.2 Driver:1800.8 I want to use the GTX1050, so I set gpu-index to 1. Only 1 CUDA device so I set cuda-index to 0. To use the OpenCL device for the GTX, I looked at the bus # (bus 2), found OpenCL device on bus 2 (device 0), so I set opengl-index to 0. Not sure if this is the right way, but it worked for me.
- Leo_Verto 7y agoThat's not true anymore, there are CPU projects now: https://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=32339 https://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=32339 https://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=32341 https://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=32341
- Austin_Conlon 7y agoAlso take a look at Rosetta@home: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22528992 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22528992.
- Bombthecat 7y agoYap, running it right now on my pc with a rtx 2060.
- Leo_Verto 7y agoDoes Rosetta have GPU projects these days? I was under the impression that it only ran on CPUs.
- Bombthecat 7y agoGood question. Never checked :)
- pauliephonic 7y agoYeah, version I'm running (7.14.2) will use GPU and/or CPU
- schwarze_pest 7y agoNo, you are misinformed. For rosetta there is neither a version 7.14.2 (that would be BOINC) nor are there any GPU projects.
- helloMy 7y agoAnd then some big pharma corp will use the data to make and patent a vaccine which - considering the worldwide demand - will be unaffordable to the majority of said gaming PC owners?
- vntok 7y agoFirst, that's not how any of this works, and second, said gaming PC owners wouldn't take part in this experiment to save themselves first and foremost but rather to help save as many other people as possible.
- rotterdamdev 7y agoBut I'd they help people, their K/D/A ratio will suffer!
- ryder9 7y ago>First, that's not how any of this works, then how does it work? do you want to explain or just hand wave it away because it contradicts your personal beliefs?
- rasz 7y agoThis is precisely how this works https://www.statnews.com/2020/01/16/public-science-behind-merck-ebola-vaccine/ https://www.statnews.com/2020/01/16/public-science-behind-me...
- Proven 7y agoThat's such a bunch nonsense, on every possible level
- microcolonel 7y agoCorporations are just a way to organize people doing things that people demand. Yes, the people who are developing vaccines generally have jobs, you would not learn their craft out of the pure goodness of your heart, why should they? If you want to help somebody develop and test a DNA vaccine for SARS-2-COV without FDA approval or perfect medical ethics, there is an option for you as well: https://youtu.be/7BTvVnOgc10 https://youtu.be/7BTvVnOgc10
- juskrey 7y agoAny actual progress have been made from all that decades of distributed folding?
- mwill 7y agofolding@home alone has 223 peer reviewed papers https://foldingathome.org/papers-results/ https://foldingathome.org/papers-results/
- juskrey 7y agoI was asking about actual progress
- zouhair 7y agoHow do you think science work? It's like losing weight and gaining muscle, you have to work hard at it and there is no moment in time where you can say that that's the moment you lost weight or gained muscle. It is all incremental progress.
- juskrey 7y agoOr it's like a huge citation rings and mutual salary justifications?
- nkrisc 7y agoSounds like you've already made up your mind about it and aren't looking for an answer to your question.
- rumanator 7y ago> Or it's like a huge citation rings and mutual salary justifications? If you have absolutely nothing to add to the discussion, please consider not saying anything at all. You're just adding noise to an otherwise interesting discussion. At least NVidia is doing something. You? You're just wasting everyone's time with your trolling.
- marcosscriven 7y agoI’m unable to view this page - it refuses to accept my ad blocker on iOS
- saagarjha 7y agoTry using Reader mode.
- nicholsonpk 7y agoIt's a nice thought from a community manager but I just checked Nvidia's GeForce Now game streaming service where I pay $5 a month to get access to 6 hour sessions and a ray tracing GPU and it's not available. Seems like a better headline would be "Reddit user reminds PC gamers that Folding@Home exists. Nvidia's twitter account agrees."
- anamexis 7y agoCertainly Nvidia could just use the spare capacity themselves to do it, instead of asking paid subscribers to do so.
- readingnews 7y agoYou would think. And where is AWS? Spare cycles for humanity? Its like driving through some burger joint where they ask you to spare change for the needy... since you know, you have so much money, and the burger joint can not possibly afford it.
- thulecitizen 7y agoJeez what an irresponsible comment. In your world how would the CEO be able to afford that new yacht for a well-needed break?
- rumanator 7y agoMore often than not the spare change jar is organized by employees.
- lowdose 7y agoIt's never enough look at how Bezos got treated when he donated for the Australian fire hazard. Last time he probably gave a handout.
- willis936 7y agoExtra capacity in a compute center equates to less power being used. That power is the largest running cost. Maybe they maxed out their tax writeoffs idk.
- xvilka 7y agoThere is also Rosetta@Home[1] and they have a related research too. They even provided some useful results[2] already. [1] https://boinc.bakerlab.org/ https://boinc.bakerlab.org/ [2] https://www.ipd.uw.edu/2020/02/rosettas-role-in-fighting-coronavirus/ https://www.ipd.uw.edu/2020/02/rosettas-role-in-fighting-cor...
- xwdv 7y agoWouldn’t AMD chips be far more powerful for this?
- fulafel 7y agoDoing this with fossil fuel produced electricity is more likely to cause loss of life than reduce it.
- triangleman 7y agoExplain.
- Proven 7y agoF@H drives me nuts with their crap documentation. Write a how-to for people to get started, FFS! What am we supposed to do with this? https://github.com/FoldingAtHome/coronavirus https://github.com/FoldingAtHome/coronavirus
- microcolonel 7y agoIt'd be interesting if they added a F@H button to GeForce Experience.
- bestboy 7y agoReddit's r/COVID19[1] has gathered big teams for Folding@Home and Rosetta@Home to crowd-source computing power against COVID19. The F@H team COVID19@REDDIT[2] has ID 236269, if you are interested to join. - dunefox 7y agoWhere does it say that they're actually using the compute for COVID-19?
- bestboy 7y agoThey have an announcement on their web site[1] and on twitter[2]. Also the web client shows information about the executing tasks (e.g. [3][4]). The COVID19 tasks are prioritized and will be executed when you keep the target settings of the client at default ("Any"). - slizard 7y agoIt would be nice if NVIDIA donated compute time on one of their large in-house machines the DGX SuperPOD [1] or the DGX SAturn V [2] (#20 and #67 on the last Top500, resp.) for COVID-19 research. Running simulations in a data-center is far more efficient. - koheripbal 7y agoThese projects are cool and do contribute to our understanding, but they are not part of the critical path of fighting this pandemic. The vaccine(s) are already in phase one clinical trial testing, as are some important anti-viral treatments which are in phase three clinical trial testing. There is no potential output from this folding project that can accelerate those timelines.
- slizard 7y agoSure, I'm aware that this is fundamental research (likely not on actual protein folding, but haven't looked at the details), which will probably not have short-term outcomes, not on the timescales required for a 1st gen vaccine (perhaps not even 2nd gen). That does however not take away from my main point, if anything it is in support of what I was trying to emphasize: such computational research is better suited for a compute cluster.
- koheripbal 7y agoI guess my point was that corporations devoting large sets of their compute clusters to partake in activity that has no potential to help the current pandemic, isn't going to make much business sense.
- slizard 7y agoI agree. In fact, donating in other ways, e.g. giving free programming, HPC etc. education to more researchers can have a higher impact on the long run.
- jchallis 7y agoThese are the victory gardens of our new home front.
- bullen 7y agoFor people heating their home with electricity this is an option, unfortunately you cannot force GPU only!
- lancemjoseph 7y agoNot true. You can select CPU and/or GPU. You can even choose to use specific GPUs by index number. So it's quite flexible.
- bullen 7y agoIn that case it's a GUI problem, I could not figure out how to do any of that. I only want to use the GPU = preferably zero CPU cores.
- sebow 7y agoI don't think i will.Nvidia cannot ask anyone to donate anything considering how expensive their cards are.Their raw compute capabilities are not even that great, it's just their own libraries and compute 'sauce' that probably rises the cost unjustifiably high. AMD will eventually catch up assuming they open their sources for compute and driver libraries. Now to the topic at hand, somehow i share my blame of the corona virus on companies that promote China and their communistic behavior, which is partly what lead to this expansion of the virus into Europe and US.The chinese government obviously misreported numbers since January for economic reasons. While it's true panic doesn't help,it's also true that politicians should always be pragmatic and frank with their populations. Thus we cannot hold China responsible but only suffer the consequences.
- arprocter 7y agoIt's a shame there isn't a Folding app for PS4, considering you could run it on PS3
- igetspam 7y agoAgreed. I have an unused ps4 in a box that could be used. I already have a spare laptop doing some work right now.
- bionhoward 7y agoThis is cool because it can help quickly determine structures if the virus mutates. However, the obsession with structural biology isn’t necessarily optimal, because we’re talking about shapes of things (analog, constantly changing) instead of discrete states of molecular circuits. Check out the book “wetware: a computer in every living cell” —- cells figured out logic long before we did. Treatments which operate from a structural paradigm, like small molecules, antibodies, and vaccines, are analog. Treatments which operate from a sequence / switching / circuit paradigm are digital. The digital solution is stronger: delete Coronavirus RNA. This isn’t dependent on shape of some molecule and how some other molecule docks with that inside a molecular blender. Genome engineering targets sequences directly, works with novel viruses right away, tolerates mutations with wobble base pairs, works in immunocomprimised patients, has potentially zero side effects, etc etc I applaud these efforts but implore you to consider: why throw a fancy molecular wrench into the virus machine when you can instead set the “virus switch” to “off?” If anyone’s gonna grok the benefit of digital over analog, it ought to be the Hacker News community. The hardest part is delivery, we need to affordably mass produce nano particles with the CRISPR DNA inside. That’s the number one thing holding back biotech from curing many diseases including this one: AAV is the standard vector but it only works once before you’re immune to the gene therapy. here’s a link to a repo (WIP) to target nCoV with CRISPR https://github.com/bionicles/coronavirus https://github.com/bionicles/coronavirus If you can help mass produce nanoparticles with microfluidics or self assembly please email me bion@bitpharma.com Folding At Home is cool. Is folding and shape-medicine the best way to cure human disease? How do we know the answer to that unless we try to program cells like we program computers?

- teddyh 7y agoAre you all right?
- fortran77 7y agoOut of curiosity, are Macs and AMD GPUs not powerful enough for this sort of thing?
- pwg 7y agoSome AMD GPUs are supported (in beta test). Here's the 'requirements' page: https://foldingathome.org/support/faq/installation-guides/linux/requirements/ https://foldingathome.org/support/faq/installation-guides/li...
- smt923 7y agomy RX 570 got through two GPU workunits for COVID-19 via folding@home without any setup or beta programs or anything, just kinda worked fine for me
- rdiddly 7y agoIf it's crowdsourced GPU compute you want, why not hit up crypto miners too? Maybe slightly less altruistic than gamers, but still.
- bestboy 7y agoMany crypto miners are indeed doing F@H at the moment. Either via curecoin[1] or by lending/joining their rigs to one of the teams[2]. [1] https://curecoin.net https://curecoin.net [2] https://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_list.php https://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_list.php
- wtracy 7y agoMy impression is that gamers still represent a much larger pool of GPU hardware than crypto miners. All of the really big miners are mining Bitcoin using ASICs. Obviously, I don't have real numbers, and I could be completely wrong.
- ralphc 7y agoI've taken my "gaming PC" to Ubuntu for running Tensorflow & Keras. Is there a Linux version of this?
- inamberclad 7y agoYes, the Folding@Home site has debian packages.
- einpoklum 7y agoI went here to get started: https://foldingathome.org/start-folding/ https://foldingathome.org/start-folding/ and started running the client, but... * The fahcontrol DEB package is not compatible with Debian 10 / Devuan 3. * There is no APT repository. I'm willing to do folding@home, but not take-care-of-their-devops-issues@home. Edit: Apparently, indeed, the folding@home work I would be doing doesn't have much in particular to do with covid-19. I feel a bit cheated here.

- mroshangara 7y agowoowww
- mtzaldo 7y agoImagine putting those bitcoin farms to work...
- q3k 7y agoWouldn't this qualify as datacenter use and as such violate the consumer nvidia driver EULA?
- caycep 7y agoIn this day and age when one can spool up any number of GPUs on AWS, how much can crowdsourced GPUs add?
- aharrison 7y agoAssuming your question is in good faith, the answer is: when you rent something on AWS, you are paying for total cost of ownership sliced out. When you run something on your gaming rig GPU, you already paid for the machine/GPU - now you are "just" paying for electricity and depreciation. So if you have a gaming rig sitting around while you are writing a web app or whatever, let it do some science for just the cost of electricity.
- ConcernedCoder 7y agoI'm so glad to see people stepping up to donate compute resources to one of the best (IMHO) uses of computers, helping humanity. Thank-you everyone.
- fritex 7y agoSomeone gets $$$$ from mining my CPU, great one! :(
- johnghanks 7y agoWhat an amazing hot take.
- xenon2 7y agoI've joined week ago and it seems that there is problem with assignments (at least for GPU). "Could not get an assignment" in log of the client.
- nu11p0inter 7y agoI find it ironic that this is behind a paywall. My default policy is to just find the article elsewhere.
- deadmutex 7y agoAre others able to download the fah client for Windows? I am getting a 502 when I try to visit https://download.foldingathome.org/ https://download.foldingathome.org/.
- radarsat1 7y agoUpate: Service still fails to start but I just ran FAHClient manually again and it connected and is now processing a job apparently, so must have been a temporary glitch. Cores and GPUs at full throttle according to htop. Don't see anything indicating whether what it's doing is related to COVID-19, so blindly hoping it's helping with something, but I'll leave it on. (Says: "project 14307"??) ---- original post ------ I was just trying to get it running on Ubuntu 18.04 in response to this post but I'm just getting a lot of errors with not very useful error messages. - kibibyte 7y agoYou should post your problem in the F@H forum. Back when I last did any serious folding stuff 10 years ago, people on the forum (some of whom still seem to be pretty active today) were immensely helpful with these kinds of problems. https://foldingforum.org/ https://foldingforum.org/
- qiqitori 7y agohttps://apps.foldingathome.org/project.py?p=14307 https://apps.foldingathome.org/project.py?p=14307 For a more user-friendly UI, you can also go to https://client.foldingathome.org/ https://client.foldingathome.org/, which will then attempt to communicate with your client on port 7396 and display the project description among other things. (This also lets you change some settings) For those running on servers, you can telnet 127.0.0.1 36330 to control your client. If you just want the project numbers quickly, you can do grep project /var/lib/fahclient/log.txt
- dzhiurgis 7y agoHow does this compare with results published by DeepMind?
- scotty79 7y agoIs there a way to force foldit@home to work specifically on coronavirus related jobs? I installed it few days ago but got so far random assortment of other tasks and nothing about coronavirus so far.
