But why did it have to rename FreeNAS to TrueNAS Core? It makes it confusing to search/google, and we'll now need to search for both FreeNAS and TrueNAS Core. I wished the name remained FreeNAS, as it had been in the past 15 years of its history.
- ac29 7y agoProbably for marketing/sales reasons. The survival of both products depends on businesses purchasing TrueNAS, so increasing exposure to that project is good for business.
- koheripbal 7y agoOr maybe the "core" version won't be free much longer?
- jlgaddis 7y agoEverything in this thread is discussed (in a few paragraphs) in the article.
- takeda 7y agoThey explained it in the post. Basically the commercial version was initially called "FreeNAS Pro" but because of the "Free" in the name it was not treated seriously in the enterprise, so it was renamed to "TrueNAS". So after the merge, they still don't want to use word "free" so they took the commercial name and added "Core" to it. People are posting that it is a great news that they unify for the consumer. I believe at best it is a neutral thing for the consumer, the unification is great for iXSystems, because it will reduce their overhead of maintaining two products separately.
