This "We know better than you" attitude is why I stopped using Firefox so many years ago. I switched back recently, to stop using Chromium, but I have a growing list of annoyances, and it might be time to give NeXt Browser a chance again, or see what else is out there.
- arebop 7y ago"Firefox defaults to Cloudflare, though you can change this." So it's whichever company you choose for DNS, rather than the company chosen by your ISP. Many of us were already choosing not to use the ISP's DNS, for reliability, but with this feature the ISP can't eavesdrop on that.
- pbhjpbhj 7y agoMost of us chose a company already, our ISP (or in my case a mixture of first + third party). Firefox are defaulting to their choice, no? Presumably they give an option page on which to choose it - even they wouldn't be so egregious as to hide such a massive change without positive user consent, surely?
- jlarocco 7y agoWell, honestly, I don't use my ISP's DNS, either, but that just highlights another way this is annoying: Firefox is overriding my decision with their own. And like I said, I trust my ISP more than I trust Firefox and CloudFlare, so their spying on my DNS (if they even are) is less of a concern to me than CloudFlare or Firefox spying on the requests.
- kyleee 7y agoAgreed, I dislike the paternalism and wish competition in the browser space was much more robust. I'm Google averse and hooked on Tree Style Tabs so Firefox it is for the time being
- jjeaff 7y agoWhile I may or may not trust cloudflare more than my isp, the fact is that my isp has my billing information and address on file. I do not pay anything or provide any personal information to cloudflare. So to me, there is an advantage to not having all my eggs in one basket. While I'm sure cloudflare could tie your DNS lookups to your identity, it would be much less trivial for them than your isp.
