I think 500$ for 2080ti won't happen that quickly. There are many hobbyists now who would happily grab several of them for a deep learning project of choice. If they become that cheap I would buy 6 (or however many I could reasonably put in one mining rig like box) just to run Leela Chess Zero training and analysis. I know a few more people in the same boat. The biggest hope for cheap GPUs is AMD actually delivering something. While I don't doubt they will get there in hardware department I am pessimistic about software.
