What on earth is their justification? You can drive a car, vote, and go to war at 18 but not use a cell phone? What politician would put their name behind this?

- squegles 7y ago> "I have no delusions that it's going to pass," he told reporter Eric Blaisdell. "I wouldn't probably vote for it myself." Did you read the article?
- kbd 7y agoSo it's purely a bill to spawn discussion... again 18 year olds are old enough to join the military but "it is clear that persons under 21 years of age are not developmentally mature enough to safely possess [cell phones]", the bill reads." Waste of everyone's time.
- gbear605 7y agoThe discussion is exactly about that. It’s a response to Vermont raising the age for gun ownership and tobacco usage to 21. So it’s the exact same logic. You agree with the bill’s author.
- Dylan16807 7y ago> You agree with the bill's author. I'm skeptical of that, considering how horribly broken the bill's analogy is. "Cell phones have often been used by mass shooters of younger ages for research on previous shootings." is so much of a strawman that it's a bale of hay.
- scottlocklin 7y ago"Rodgers writes within the proposal that cellphones are a large factor in teenage driving deaths and can lead to bullying and radicalization. "In light of the dangerous and life-threatening consequences of cellphone use by young people, it is clear that persons under 21 years of age are not developmentally mature enough to safely possess them," the bill reads. "just as the General Assembly has concluded that persons under 21 years of age are not mature enough to possess firearms, smoke cigarettes or consume alcohol.""
- munk-a 7y agoGosh yea, other than this specific proposal all laws in the US make sense - I sure am glad you can drink when you're 18 and no states have stupid religious laws limiting sales on Sundays to tiny bottles.
- theltrj 7y agoNot sure, but there is an argument out there that a cell phone + social media is as addictive as a slot machine, read some of Georgetown's Comp Sci Professor, Cal Newport: https://www.gq.com/story/cal-newport-digital-minimalism https://www.gq.com/story/cal-newport-digital-minimalism
