Isn't this because that permission is tied to looking for bluetooth beacons or nfc? So if you appear on that to find your speakers anything else might find you too and track you.
This isn't sonos' fault.
- Angostura 7y ago> Gathering the approximate location of your Sonos system allows us to auto-populate your registration postal code and predetermine the radio locale for your system so it is configured as soon as you are done setting up your system.
- rpastuszak 7y agoSo, "saving you two clicks"?
- rtkwe 7y agoThey only quoted half the section ignoring the actual important bit the location access allows them to do: > Location access is required to detect your nearby speakers during setup and your mobile device’s WiFi network information.
- secabeen 7y agoYep, there exist databases of the geolocation of nearly every Wifi AP in the world. If you have the MAC address of nearby APs, you can lookup where you are trivially. https://www.skyhook.com/ https://www.skyhook.com/
- criddell 7y agoIs registration required? That feels like a made up excuse. Same with radio locale. One of the benefits of an internet radio is that it frees you up from physical limitations of OTA radio.
- rtkwe 7y ago> Location access is required to detect your nearby speakers during setup and your mobile device’s WiFi network information. This is what they actually need it for the bit you quoted is a minor convenience but they require it to be able to do this.
- holstvoogd 7y agono it isn't. This is 100% not necessary & 100% sonos' fault
- givinguflac 7y agoI don’t know about android, but ios13 doesn’t allow apps to see WiFi networks without location access. So, not Sonos’ choice.
- tinus_hn 7y agoWhy would the app need to see WiFi networks? Apps can’t connect to WiFi networks and if the speakers need to connect to them, they can see them themselves.
- givinguflac 7y agoYou clearly don’t understand Sonos. How do you expect the user to choose a WiFi network and enter the password on a speaker with no input or output besides audio?
- tinus_hn 7y agoIf the app can tell the speaker which WiFi network to use, it can also ask the speaker which networks it sees.
- givinguflac 7y agoAnd how would that matter if the user's device is not on the same network they set the speaker up on? You're describing a confusing and frustrating experience which would be a nightmare to help non-technical users with.
