While the updates here are good, the bigger thing I'm surprised they aren't addressing is spam messages requiring attention.
Just split the messages into folders of "people I have contacted and/or whitelisted" and "Strangers". Any incoming message of a non-whitelisted person or someone I haven't contacted previously should not trigger a notification and should be nothing more than a notification bubble in the folder with a number of unread messages.
This means that I only forced to deal with messages by known people, and when I get bored I can peruse messages from strangers and decide if I want to deal with them or not.
