Not that unique; the early Athlon64s were miles ahead of Intel, who'd gone a long way down the wrong road at the time. This feels very similar, but doesn't bode that well for AMD if they can only do this once a decade.
- tyingq 7y agoI feel like that's less than fair. AMD is a much smaller company with fewer resources.
- adventured 7y ago> AMD is a much smaller company with fewer resources. To put that point into context, Intel's operating profit in just its most recent quarter ($6.55b) is greater than AMD's revenue over the last four quarters combined ($6b).
- CamouflagedKiwi 7y agoI'm not trying to be harsh; in both cases I think it's impressive what they did. Just saying it sucks a bit that in between Intel inevitably seems to get back in front.
- simion314 7y ago>Just saying it sucks a bit that in between Intel inevitably seems to get back in front. What sucks is that Intel used illegal means to fight AMD , so despite having the better CPU the OEMs were not using AMD in their builds.
- gscott 7y agoCpus are now lasting a lot longer... a top end cpu is likely to still be fast enough after 6 years, maybe longer. Catching up to Intel and surpassing them may be good enough for a whole decade.
- clarry 7y agoDunno, my Ryzen 7 1800X was relatively "top end" when I got it on launch day, and I'm already itching for 16 cores & faster RAM. I can't imagine using my T470p for work for five more years, it's already feeling horrendously slow.
- gscott 7y agoNothing wrong with wanting the newest latest and greatest but your "old" setup is good! https://www.techspot.com/review/1863-two-years-later-ryzen-1800x-vs-core-i7-7700k/ https://www.techspot.com/review/1863-two-years-later-ryzen-1...
- lonelappde 7y agoIf you don't care about electricity/thermals, midtier 95w 4core chips from 2011 are still plenty fast. If you do care about energy, then Intel gets better every year, with 5w tdp-down i7 chips coming out.
- dtech 7y agoThose 2003 (AMD Opteron) - 2007 (Intel Core 2) years were some of the most successful years for AMD, and it continued for a little while after until they couldn't keep up anymore. If the result of this is that AMD gains in power and market share for a few years and then the there will be another major leap in CPU quality due to Intel, I'd consider that pretty good.
