I liked Monty Python and the humor until I saw the final scene in 'the life of Brian'; couldn't find them funny after seeing that scene, as I used to remember that an awful lot of people died at the cross as a means of capital punishment, dying a slow and painful death. Didn't manage to swallow that 'Life's a piece of shit, When you look at it'.
- WilliamEdward 7y agoThat's a weird part to take offence to. I am assuming you saw the opening scenes with all the peasants and had a similar reaction? They suffered too, after all.
- pstuart 7y agoThere was a lot of controversy over that film, much of it rather amusing. A lovely debate with they had back in the day (and utterly win): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ni559bHXDg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ni559bHXDg To each their own, but I'd suggest that your offense taken was not necessary and could have been misconstrued.
- cgrealy 7y agoComedy = tradegy + time. You can absolutely make jokes about even the worst things in history; it all depends on how you approach the subject.
- saghm 7y agoGenuine question: had you never seen the "Spanish Inquisition" skits before seeing that movie? If so, why didn't you have a similar reaction to them?
- MichaelMoser123 7y agoThat one was about ideology, that one was funny. It didnt state categorically that life is shit. To me it didnt cross any boundaries of bad taste. It also didn't tell me what to think about life, the universe and everything else.

- NeedMoreTea 7y agoFor very many people life is shit. Even in rich, "civilised" nations. Yet the message of "Always look on the Bright Side of Life" is optimism and humour in spite of adversity. Not that it's shit, but to have a laugh despite that, or because of that.
- MichaelMoser123 7y ago# For very many people life is shit Well, i have come to disagree with this assertion. I think it is wrong. It is infinitely better to be alive than dead.
- sorokod 7y agoClearly you are entitled to your own opinion about the value of your own life, but suicide is a thing.
- coldtea 7y ago>It also didn't tell me what to think about life, the universe and everything else. Whereas a casual song at the end of comedy, you chose to understand as the final gospel and embodiment of the ideology of Monty Python, that they tried to force upon you? Never even occurred to you that it was done for the mood/theme of the movie, not as some deep philosophical statement, and that they could even have an opposite message in another song in some other movie/skitch? It always amazes me how people think about things...
- pndy 7y ago"Dear Sir, I wish to complain in the strongest possible terms (...)"
- goto11 7y agoI think many miss how dark this scene really is, just because it is so silly at the same time. I can understand people not finding it funny, and you are not necessarily missing the point the Pythons are making.
- King-Aaron 7y agoBut stoning people to death is ok?
- golemotron 7y agoVirtue signaling to oneself is the enemy of laughter.
- tralarpa 7y agoYou are 1900 years late with your complaint :) In the first decades after the death of Jesus of Nazareth, the cross was not widely used as a symbol among Christians. Who wanted to be reminded of the humiliation of God's own son on the cross? It was the Christians (and their persecutors) that came after the first generations of followers who slowly turned it into a pop-art symbol (first in its abstract form, later with the shape of a human body on it)
- coldtea 7y ago>Who wanted to be reminded of the humiliation of God's own son on the cross? For the Christians it was not a humiliation, but the moment of triumph of Christ - he chose to be incarnated and sacrifice himself, that's part of the whole point.
- amanaplanacanal 7y agoSure that's how people think about it now. They were talking about how it was seen then.
- hansthehorse 7y agoI've always wondered what the christian world would look like if the Romans had hung jesus.
- MichaelMoser123 7y agoI an not of any Christian denimination. I don't know what you are talking off.
- codeulike 7y agoYou should try looking on the bright side. Seriously though, its possible to see that song as inspirational. "Life's a piece of shit, when you look at it" is basically one of the four noble truths that the Buddha taught.
- coldtea 7y agoSeriously? Comedy is about laughing at death, misery, and everything in between. Jewish comedians for example frequently joke about nazism and the holocaust, which is even worse (and more numbers wise) that the crossings, and they're not 30+ generations removed from it (like we are with Roman times), but one or two -- some even had parents who died there. Comedy is not (or not just) about jolly people slipping on bananas and throwing tarts at each other...
