There is no way that "3 hours of planes taking off" or "3 hours of rain" are getting 10's of millions of views without getting recommended widely, including myself. 18 hours of "ambient sounds" has 130 million views so that's some heavy promotion, not just some occasional insomniac using search.
- JBReefer 7y agoI watch these videos religiously, for what it’s worth.
- darkpuma 7y agoThose sort of videos in particular have a very large replay value, as many insomniacs may play that video every night.
- dredds 7y agoWhich is kinda my point. The amount of HD traffic and wasted bandwidth is just insane. At what point would YT just acknowledge the same viewer is watching (or listening) the same video over and over and over again before offering a download button? (sure tech ppl can use 3rd-party tool, but all are blocked on Google Play, and most others limited to short vids only)
- saint_fiasco 7y agoSophisticated ISPs hopefully cache that sort of thing.
- LgWoodenBadger 7y agoHow will they cache TLS-protected content?
- cameronbrown 7y agoI believe Google like Netflix put boxes in your ISP's DC to cache for them.
- lopmotr 7y agoAnything that wastes bandwidth, I see as a positive thing because it's pressure on networks to increase bandwidth. Once it's in place, using it is harmless since it would otherwise have been wasted serving nobody. Netflix forced ISPs in my country to pull finger when their customers would have regular evening internet slowdowns. I'm looking forward to more improvements as they cater to cloud gaming.
- girvo 7y agoGosh I hope so. But the NBN is so damned miserable, I'm not holding much hope.
- fphhotchips 7y agoYoutube has a download button. You just have to pay for it.
- yellowapple 7y ago> "3 hours of planes taking off" Now that's a video idea. I currently live right under the flight path for planes flying out of SFO; I should set up a camera and just record the sky, since they fly pretty close overhead.
- r00fus 7y agoIt's great. Some folks really could watch that all day.
- strawberryfan 7y agoI dunno. For me it's Jimmy Barnes screaming for 10 hours. Pure catharsis. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfkts0u-m6w https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfkts0u-m6w
- sreyaNotfilc 7y agoYou may be joking, but that's a great way to earn some revenue for doing essentially nothing. There's a guy who goes into the woods and takes videos of that environment along with great sound quality.
- sreyaNotfilc 7y agoIt really depends. If its a silent video, yea I can see why its bogus. But, if its background noise, then yes its useful. Sometimes when I have trouble sleeping, I search "white noise" and find videos like this. Usually I click on something like a 'fan blowing' video or a 'thunder storm' video. The noise/pattern combination somehow helps me sleep. It also helps me relax and focus while working.
